Picked up a M100 today

Hi All.

Just bought a non runner. Has a seized alternator, drivers window goes down but goes on the skew on the way up, some exhaust fumes coming from under the turbo, 2 small rips in the hood, 88,000 on the clock, stainless exhaust, many parts replaced looking at the history including the hood due to vandal damage, new tyres, needs cambelt change, noisy tappet. I already own an Excel but was looking for a small project. Some very good 'how to's' on here which will prove invaluable. Looking forward to chatting with you guys!

Congratulations. I think I recognise your username from the Excel.net forum. I had an Eclat Excel and then an Excel SE, so I know the joy/pain you must experience.

I just got my first M100 last month and am working through many little issues but fundamentally the cars seem lovely.

And Wayne in Bahrain sells spares for window parts ie gears, sliders and butterfly clips. He also sells spare parts to rebuild the pop up headlights (you will undoubtedly need these in the near future, if not now)

For cambelt, waterpump etc.... you need to visit the Rockauto website

Personally, I would change the waterpump and associated bits and pieces whilst doing the cambelt as you don't know the previous history. I know others will disagree with me on this but better to be safe than sorry

Thanks for the replies especially the info and links. My alternator is seized and snapped the belt that I found in the boot. Would a kit fix a seized alternator?
I was going to take it to the local place Powerlite who rebuilt my Excel alternator. Looking at the history, it has got through 3 alternators allready

I had a seized altenator on my first Elan, after an extended period of non-use and parked outside.

It transpired that the whole 'winding' had expanded due to moisture ingress and actually cracked the casing.

As it happened, I had a spare altenator so it wasn't a great drama (other than the hassle of swapping them over) - but one of these kits certainly wouldn't have fixed it!

Cliff - The first alternator was changed in July 1997 at a cost of £387.97. A garage in Lanarkshire.

Be wary of any alternator from ACW Electrics in Dorset. I think he got a bad batch of refurbed ones and I ended up with 2 and I know of at least 2 other owners who gave got through 4 or more of them

Hello and welcome,

With it being immobile you have the advantage that you can inspect parts before deciding to replace them. Regarding the alternator the kit is for the original alternator it, depends why it is seized - I can get whichever parts are available. It is worth reading the background on alternators as its not an off the shelf item

Yes - I was looking at those videos before I bought the car to see what I was letting myself in for. Just got to finish some jobs on the Excel and then I will turn my attention to the Elan. Looking forward to a few battles!!

there is a regular West Midlands meeting on the 3rd Thursday of the month at Weatheroak...... it's obviously not as good as it used to be (when i went regularly!) but they are a good bunch and helpful/friendly too.
