Is there such a thing as a Negative Crankcase Valve (NCV) ?

Short answer = No.
PCV is Positive Crankcase Ventilation.
It is a venting system for the crankcase so that the oil vapours go into the inlet. Because we have a turbo the pressure in the inlet can be higher than the crankcase, which would have the opposite effect to that intended and pressurise the crankcase. So there is a Non-return Valve which only opens when the pressure in the crankcase is positive compared to the plenum.

Firstly a big thank you to Simon for the grommet GB.

Secondly, where is the arse end of my old grommet likely to have ended up? I carefully pulled the PCV out but the back of the grommet is nowhere to be seen. Is it safe where it is for the minute (and may have been there for goodness knows how long) or do I need to take the cam cover off? If it needs to come off, is it gasketted or gunked?

The good news is that the gasket can often be reused........ the even better news (for me) is that I've got a couple of new ones sitting on my shelf..... but my be persueded to part with one if you find your's is unuseable.

There is a small smear of gunk where the cam seals butt against the gasket - see WSM for details (EC7 p28).

Oh, and the bit of grommet is probably inside the baffle system..... the one which is spot welded or rivetted in place.... but can be drilled out, tapped and setscrewed together again......it's never straightforward is it!

So, if it's trapped inside the baffle, it's unlikely to go anywhere untoward.

I wouldn't be able to guarantee that....... obviously, there is a way through, otherwise it wouldn't be a baffle, it'd be a barricade!

Having inspected my cam cover closely yesterday while I was at the powder coaters with it, I can report that there IS an aperture at one end of the baffle plate which could expel part of a PCV grommet.

And like Pinky says, I’m going to drill the rivets and remove mine, and then either tap and screw it back, or bond it.

Thanks for that. I've taken out the bolts but haven't cracked the gasket yet so I may go fishing with some bent wire tomorrow.

I thought access was bad in the Lotus, but . . . who on earth thought it was a good idea to put the Volvo fuse box underneath the front passenger seat?
