Agreed. Its difficult times for everyone and in organisations we don't even consider.
I have a daughter who is a paramedic, wife works in a well known food store ( and no we don't get a priority for toilet paper) and i work in insurance and still trying to sort the recent flood claims.

The professionalism of people at Imperial College and the likes of Prof. Chris Whitty behind the bluff, bluster and bollocks of Johnson and HandCock† is reassuring but being in an at-risk category, I started tracking deaths and the graph below worries me immensely and makes me wonder whether I should go to China.

How long are 10,000 bottles of hand sanitzer going to last in the NHS you bloody ignoramus? Let's try some pre-school playgroup sums:
Assume there are 500 shots per bottle.
There are about 500,000 nurses and doctors in the NHS.
Assume they are working at 75% capacity over three shifts.
Assume they are attending to 4 patients per hour.
(10,000 × 500) / (500,000 × 75% / 3 × 4) = 10 hours
Ten bloody hours. No the wonder you need a lapel badge to remind you where you work.

With little to do, other than put off the list of jobs that my "essential worker" wife seems to think I will wish to fulfil during her working hours, I have been trying to seperate the wheat from the chaff amongst the 'experts' out there.....

....so, first off, I decided that anything linked from FaceBook was likely to have a high chance of being utter bollox, with no provenance other than "Karen heard this whilst she was in the queue for her Benson & Hedges down the local Spar, and it comes from a Doctor in Denmark......"

I have been reading a lot, and there appears to be little 'new' about the spread of Covid-19.... what makes it so bad is that it was never intended to be easily defeated by Human antibodies, so humans have to recognise it and then fight it...... all within a short incubation period.

Next, the virus doubles in 5 days, which is extremely rapid when many/most 'common' diseases require a 7 - 14 day period to double, so it spreads rapidly.

Useful article for sane, rational thinkers and 1/10²³% of FaecesByurk. As he says, there are huge benefits to be had from acting early and you can see that in my graph for deaths in China, but it does not look like the rest of the world took heed, despite the 5 week headstart over China. Deaths are running a few weeks behind initial infection so I'd hope to see some change soon.

The animated graph highlights how there is an early drop in treatment capacity caused by NHS staff infections. Early testing of all suspected cases was essential to get a handle on the virus and enable accurate models to be developed and looking at the bigger picture, I agree that continuation of testing 100% of the general public served little purpose, but why has it taken the UK so long to wake up to the need to now test essential workers?

I suppose one of the advantages of living in a communist dictatorship is that people do as they are told. Unfortunately no man is an island, and there are places in the world where they have no hope of being able to contain it, so unfortunately it will be present and if they are unlucky it will come back.

I'm with the scientists, it's the media that need to up their game. The best thing we can do is take the advice and stay in. Not being in an at-risk group is not permission to go out, now is not an oppertune moment to go to the beach.

To everyone who is working to keep things going for us all a huge thank you! The rest of us have a great opportunity to play with our old cars.

There is a lot to worry about with the virus if you are more than 60 years old, and if you have a preexisting medical condition. I don't agree that Facebook postings on this subject are particularly terrible. They might not be perfectly accurate, but they do tend to convey an urgent need for the public to act, something which lots of people are still ignoring. I think that the next 10 days will be profound for us in the UK.

Since both my wife and I are in the latter risk category, we have done our best to avoid any interaction with others for about 10 days now, but it doesn't help that two of our kids have just returned from university, and another finished school at the end of last week. They are all isolated from us for a week, which is hard on everyone. But the hard reality is that we will all know at least one person who dies from this virus, and we have a personal and societal obligation to minimise the chances that we will end up seriously ill in hospital.

People keep talking about bouncing back from this. I hope that we do, but there is a real chance of economic collapse, and that would probably be more deadly than the virus.

There are some huge positives coming out of all this. The creativity around finding new ways to achieve social interaction, and the emergency move to home working are revolutionary. For those of us who can work from home, I suspect productivity will be hugely enhanced, and we will be able to spend more time with our loved ones. I feel that communities are rallying around those who need help, although whether there is actually enough food to go around will become clearer in the weeks ahead.

It is pretty impossible to expect the 'average' member of society to behave in a manner that you (or probably I) would consider to be reasonable.... we all have different responsibilities.

This is why some feel invulnerable, and saw yesterday as an extra days holiday, and went to the beach/park..... as a result, NT shut all of their properties, and I have little doubt that any public 'meeting' of more than 3 people will become a criminal offence (how it is policed is a seperate arguement).

However, from my home in West Wales it is easy to say that I don't want hoardes of people coming here in their caravans/second homes or holiday lets..... but if I were resident in London, and had such an oportunity, how would I feel then????

We all know (rationally) that the NHS can't cope in rural areas as they don't have the facilities.... but will they cope in urban/city areas?

MIL says that near her in Cornwall, many "Londoners" have gone down to their second homes, and some have now gone back as their favorite pubs/restaurants cant/won't serve them! )possibly an urban myth, but I don't know).


As an admission, I was on the road for the weekend, and driving up to Brum on Saturday morning the roads were very empty...... coming home yesterday,not so much! So, was mine an essential trip? I find it hard to justify, and could argue it either way on an objective basis as a third party, but I would do it again if asked! However, now I'm home, I don't see myself going anywhere for the foreseeable future.
