Everything depends on what you aim for in terms of drivability.
I did not go for the top end performance route and was rewarded with good drivability.
Downpipe makes a big difference indeed.
Mainly due to elimination of the pre-cat.
you could start by emptying the stock pre-cat housing, then admire the can of worms...

No cat on my car. So would it still make a difference?
Obviously still wanna retain drivabilty so deciding what turbo is best ? For 250hp but quick spool up.

You have no Main CAT i presume, but the pre-cat is in the OEM downpipe AKA 'the lump'.
If you do a search, there is lot to read cocening upgrades here, you can start with Piper downpipe in the search field at the top right.
There is a lot to take into account and if you understand everything, then you can decide what is the next best step for you.
There is always a tradeoff though!
first question before upgrade on the performance side: How are your brakes?

Brakes upgraded to pnm. Suspension and geo all done last week. Adjustable. So next step is engine. Just trying to source a downpipe. First. If its worth getting then decided on turbo route

Wow! A simple M100 downpipe £349.66
Full spaghetti piece for an Elise: only £403 !
Damn you Lotus that there is no space for alternatives and damn you Piper for charging so much because there is an m100 badge somwhere

Oh well, better expensiva and available then unobtanium-priced...
You know that the Piper downpipe might require some work right?
Again, check LEC first...

I always thought the oem down pipe cast iron lump where the pre-cat is fitted was actually empty on the SE.
The pre-cat being fitted to fed (or just CA) and S2 cars?
So fitting the piper down pipe merely improved airflow and reduced weight on the SE.

Very well possible!
My starting point is my own S2

Don't believe the UK SE had a catalytic converter fitted in any part of the exhaust and from memory is not wired to the ECU to make use of such. Certainly don't think my 1990 SE has one anywhere I know the S2 got them at least for the UK that is.

John is correct, both of mine were done purely to save weight and improve airflow (and to look far prettier!).

Nothing there. No pre cat, no nothing. Just empty and bloody heavy. I had Monty's one (c/o Dico's Courier Services) hanging up in my garage as a sculpture for ages. The spiders loved it

The Piper pre-cat eliminator is a nice piece of kit, haven't got around to fitting it but it looks good on the shelf

I also have a spare new turbine housing as i believe boost creep would be an accompanying factor.

I remember speaking to Tony Munro a while back. I have not seen him on here for a while.
He changed injectors & MAP sensor to work with each other to give more than 1 bar boost an upgraded turbo, bigger exhaust, programmable (Haltech) ECU programmed with a session on a rolling road.
The car was tested at 260-something bhp. Sounds great? He hated it.
He felt is was ok on the track where you would want to keep it revving high but as a road car, he felt it was ruined because the turbo could not spool up properly until 4100rpm

I have boost set at 1.25 bar giving 267BHP.
Massive torque steer even with Quaiffe Limited Slip Diff.
When Turbo kicks in its mental.
But as stated above boost comes in to slow, I need more CC's

How are you avoiding fuel cutoff as it nears 1bar?

Let me count the ways. Personally I would stop at 220 Wheel HP.

Agreed, my Elan is currently with specialists and they think traction disappears at 230 bhp. currently its at 220 and they are still re-porting the waste-gate to get it drive-able below 4000rpm, also it currently needs the 99 type fuel to run half decent
That said, I've today sent them details of the lowered suspension.
