I suspect your regulator/diode pack. There have been mutiple examples of alternators packing up in recent times

I did measure the voltage at the battery as I didn't have time.e to get to the alternator

Simon mentioned something earlier which implied things weren't quite right

Well spotted Rambo - I took that from Steve's last post with an elanscan.

12.3v is flat and charging slowly.

More evidence that it is the alternator. Pull the plug and see if the light goes out.

Yep. Next move. Need to find a full day to fault find really. Doing 30mins at a time is pretty inefficient.

Mark, I’ve just had my alternator and starter refurbished to a really good standard by a family firm in the West Midlands (see below). I can’t remember the contact details off the top of my head, because it was ‘friend of a friend’, but I can probably dig them out for you.

Just had mine refurbished by a ham fisted diyer. He used a group buy kit from LEC. Was very cheap but removing alternator is a pig of a job. So is putting it back.

But it's now working fine. Quite pleased with my work really :D

John,

I think I must use the same mechanic (I recognise the description).....

..... but the kit you (we) got wouldn't necessarily address the specific issue Mark has got, as it appears to be the electronic gubbins inside which is buggered (to be technical).

Just the one now, but this one's mine! - and it will be finished eventually..... - but also temporary custodian of a project until it is finished enough for Angie to drive it
