My beloved Elan failed yesterday for the very first time
Just serviced the car with new spark plugs, new ignition cables and installed the Everest chip (thank you Alan for the stunning results)

Was driving a couple of hundred kilometers after the service and while cruising the engine started hesitating.
Felt like a failing cylinder... few kilometers later the engine totally failed
However, I could simply start again, drive a few minutes and had the same problem.
Thank God I got home.

This morning I tried to start.
The engine ignites and instantly stops again.
When I try to restart, the starter motor goes off, but nothing more...

Any ideas ?

I’d remove the Everest and try it without.

If you don't find any obvious cause, here's something to look into:

A friend of mine with an Esprit had a very similar problem to yours. After a period of rough running the car would start normally then stall.
In the end it was traced to a catalytic converter which fell apart internally and blocked the exhaust.

Good suggestion Ron. If the cat was getting close to failing, the extra stress of having an Everest may have accelerated the blockage.

First of all I would do the "paper clip" test and see if there are any stored error codes.

Secondly, I would disconnect the battery, leave for a few minutes and see if the ECU has been reset (NB you will lose ang stored error codes)

Thirdly, I would try removing the Everest chip temporarily as John has suggested to see if the problem goes away. It may well be that the extra boost has caused cat. problems as others have eluded to, assuming, that is, you have an S2 ?

Simpler still - check that the fuel pump is priming before trying to start and check that you are getting a decent spark.

As a guess it I'd start with HT failure (coil pack) , followed by lack of fuel - fuel filter or fuel pressure regulator.

I'll try to restart without the Everest chip.
Lets hope it works (fingers crossed)
It's an S2, do they have often problems with the Everest chip ?

No common problems with the S2 but to install the Everest Chip, you need to make sure you have fully seated the adapter into the chip slot. The levers must return to vertical which will let you know the adapter is fully seated.

Ok, without the Everest, it starts perfect
Now, some further investigation... how come, my S2 doesn't respond correctly on the chip ?
If anyone has any ideas, please tell them, I'll check Alan`s site meanwhile.

Solved !
built the chip out, started ok, built him back in, started more then ok... don't know what is was, but she drives again
Will visti the local Lotus dealer to do a total check up before we leave on a road trip.
