Any Idea What This is?

A backscratcher for the mouse/mice living in the heater box?

An idea of where you found it might narrow down what it was attached to...

Since I can see the shift boot, I am assuming it is around the center console?

I started off seeing the edge of the seat cushion (maybe??) so thought it was centre console.....

.... then saw what I thought was the gear stick, so it was a stronger suspicion??.....

..... the plugs for the window switches were a clue......

..... but the temperature gauge confirmed it to me!

Having said that, and worked out where it is, I would say that it is to do with an aftermarket alarm system (that is always a good guess for lumps of unidentified wiring anywhere in the Elan!).....

..... my reasons for this being that in my red car, the microwave motion sensor was in that location (Laserline system)......

..... but that is purely a guess, so take it with a large pinch of salt.

It goes between the two window switches on the link wire as shown in the wiring diagram, also looks like it was made as part of the loom rather than a later addition, and doesn't link anywhere else. I initially thought aftermarket wiring as that is what I'm trying to sort out but it is properly done and the aftermarket wiring is in a league of its own.
It has some - minus signs along its length.

Is this on the S2?

If it links the window switches, could it be something designed to operate both windows for a short time when unlocking / locking the car...... thus allowing them to drop 1cm or so and help maintain the weatherproofing nature of the superb sealing system??

(basically, I have never seen anything like it before, and I'm pontificating for no real reason!)

I've peeled off the loom tape and it appears to be an original part of the loom as the wires are too long if it had been added afterwards they would be too short to end up like this.

I've just had another look at the wiring diagram and it seems seems correct for the black earth for the switch led ground..... Tracing back along the diagram shows a resistor in line I presume to bring the voltage down for the led. So I'll guess that it is that resistor.

I didn't know of the existence of a resistor until just now and I've not noticed it before.

Yes S2 but the circuit is common.

I think you're right. I can't remember the switches having limit resistors on the LEDs so the 220Ω gives about 20mA in each LED.

I just had my center console off to clean underneath and the same thing was there; so it is stock for FED at least too.

@Rambo: I know the photo isn't great, but isn't that it, lying on the console bed, just behind the window switch up in the foreground?

@Saltaire: Yeah this was a continuation of operation goof(p) off as you can see from the puddle of gunk that is supposed to be holding the anchor plate to the console. Off Topic, but a top tip: Original Gorilla Glue has been the best so far as a substitute for that stuff to hold these metal anchors to the plastic/fiberglass trim pieces.
