Apart from the cat overheating light coming on (what is that all about?) a mile before the garage (rectified by parking under a bridge because it was hissing down with rain and removing the lamp).

I think the catalyst may overheat when your mixture is a little bit too rich ...
As far as I know, when the AFR is OK (14.7) the temperature inside the catalyst is at its nominal value.
When the AFR is a little too low the catalyst is much hotter, but if your AFR drops even more the temperature drops too.
So basically the catalysts overheats when it's just a little too rich.
But that would need confirmation from a specialist on that subject. And since your car has a catalyst that means it's closed loop so I don't know what can be done to address that... apart from removing the lamp indeed

I think the catalyst may overheat when your mixture is a little bit too rich ...
As far as I know, when the AFR is OK (14.7) the temperature inside the catalyst is at its nominal value.
When the AFR is a little too low the catalyst is much hotter, but if your AFR drops even more the temperature drops too.
So basically the catalysts overheats when it's just a little too rich.
But that would need confirmation from a specialist on that subject. And since your car has a catalyst that means it's closed loop so I don't know what can be done to address that... apart from removing the lamp indeed

That logic works well, but I think it only applies to Japanese spec Elans. Mine appeared to have lost its cat a long time before I got it so I'm pretty sure it's a dodgy connection somewhere. Funnily enough, it hasn't reoccurred since my fix.

Why don't MoT certificates now give the emissions data? How are we expected to know when something is drifting the wrong way and needs to be looked at? Is this progress?

Really? My last one did - I got a separate sheet with all the readings. My MoT date was extended to November, but I’ll be taking a particular interest when it comes round.

The only time I know where the emissions (& brake efficiency) print-outs are not provided are where they didn't meet the required standard, and a PASS was issued.....

For a failure, they have to tell you (so it can be fixed!) - but if your emissions were tested in an unorthadox manner that would prevent the machine (as it's all computerised these days) from accepting the results without "Computer says no!", then that may explain it.....

.... eg, I know that you have had 'discussions' in the past about the testing standard being for the engine not the car - but if the tester accepts that, he can't then enter the figures as tested, because the 'puter would shout "FAIL".......

The MOT paperwork is effectively optional and the test centre have to provide their own ink and paper since they stopped having pre printed certificates.

I've always had to ask for the brake efficiency numbers since it is a pass or fail and usually hand written. The emissions are usually on a printout provided with the certificate. Last week when the Blue Car passed I was asked if I wanted a copy, I presume because most people don't know or care what it says and do nothing with it other than throwing it away.
