Everest chip availability

Postby Blue ass fly » Wed 09.12.2020, 16:09

After many months of trying to contact alan / failing registering and placing an order ime beginning to wonder if theyre still being produced
I know hes very busy with another business and understand he has a life outside of the lec community but i would expect a response in 12 months or more
Does anyone have contact with him personally to confirm or deny he still plans producing more
Failing that has anyone got one to sell
Thanks
Steve

Alan (ESM - ElanScanMan) last visited this site over 4 years ago. The last time I saw Alan in person was Donington 2009 I think.

If it's any help or consolation, I ordered and received a 1499 Everest 12 months ago. I sent him my 9929 Everest for the update.

Not a new one, just modifying an existing one.

I have no knowledge of other ways of contacting him.

I've been in touch with Alan and he sends his apologies. He is very busy with his full time job and has family issues as well as hardware issues with his suppliers. I am sure that, as previously, he will respond in the fullness of time.

What does that mean? What is fullness of time?
1yr? 2yr?

It is just pure ignorance not responding to customer emails. He wasn't too busy to answer your email or phonecall

Now, I may the one out of step here, and I fully understand the frustration felt by some (many?) who have not had success in making a purchase, but this sort of post is unlikely to make Alan rush home and get out his soldering iron.......

.... if it were me, I think I'd just close the shop and bugger off (and some may well say that that is what he has actually done).

In which case I say to you all - Alan has done some great work for us over the years, I last saw him in person over 10 years ago, and he no longer owns an Elan (as far as I know). He probably has little personal interest in helping people who he doesn't know, has never met, and appear to be demanding.

Whilst there are calls for "people" to make contact with Alan, I can say that I have no other contact details than anyone else on the site, and if anyone has a different method, then that is probably because they have been mates for a lot longer than i have been around.

If anyone is unhappy with the situation, all I can say is that there are alternatives to the Mountain chip - these days, programable (Arduino based) ECUs are commonplace, so there is nowt to stop you going your own way......... and at the end of the day, it is a nice addition, but NOT essential to the running of the car. In my mind, it falls into the same sort of category as the hard top, roll hoops, rear light conversions etc... things which are nice to have, but not essential to keeping you on the road.

If you don't like the fact you can't get one, then you must either wait, live without it, find an alternative or move on.

I 'll guess that the Spanish one sidled up to him in a friendly manner... and asked nicely as a friend. In any case he received a sensible and polite response to us all. Seems reasonable to me!

I don't think we need to worry about anything that is written here as he has not been on the forum for over 4yrs. I think that says it all.

dapinky wrote:He probably has little personal interest in helping people who he doesn't know, has never met, and appear to be demanding.

Then why continue to have a full blown ecommerce site up?
But I agree, he has zero interest. There are members on this site that have now been trying for 2yrs and still not had the courtesy of a single reply. Would you say that is demanding?

I don't like the fact this forum still promotes a site that the owner does not even bother to reply to LEC Elan owner enquiries on his ecommerce site. How does this help the advancement of our cars? Or the forum? Eveything on elanchips is now legacy.

Stick a link to it on WikiLEC and stop promoting a site that the owner does not have the courtesy to reply to enquiries that are being generated from this forum. (until such times that he decides, if ever, to resume but given it has been at least 2yrs for some, of trying to purchase a chip and over 4yrs since being on this site, i'm not holding my breath)

This same post also appears in the "Delete Mountain Chips Link" thread, for the avoidance of doubt.

Right, I'm writing this with my Admin hat on, but using my own account just so there can be no accusations that I am hiding behind an anonymous forum account.

I am not happy with the way this thread has progressed, from starting out as an enquiry, to ending up where "we" are basically being told how to run this site, and what links we can and cannot allow to be on here.

I have answered the points raised as to why the link remains, AND IT WILL CONTINUE TO REMAIN.

Alan has done some great work for all of us - and now YOU are demanding that I delete a link to his website because YOU can't buy something from him, and somehow, that is OUR fault for allowing a link?????

Let me spell it out really simply - IT AIN'T HAPPENING!

Maybe you think that I am being autocratic? Well, tough! This is NOT a democracy, and if you don't like it, you don't have to be here.... I'll even refund every penny you have paid to be here, and it'll come from the wages I receive for doing this "job".

The elanchips site is there for everyones benefit.... those with chips, and those who use 'elanscan' - which is pretty well everyone on here. How much has any of that actually cost you? - and then Alan gets grief (which he may or may not see, but I can assure you that he will become aware of it) from someone he doesn't know.

YOU also say that "we" should archive the link into WikiLEC????

Oh, okay - but why don't YOU do it - it's a bloody Wiki FFS!

As another way of explanation, I will state that I have no control over the 'appearance' of the LEC website, and no access to control ANY of it's contents.... I cannot get into the server to add, delete, alter or replace anything. The site was set up well before my time, and I have never been given the "keys". I am an Admin on the Forum (which is part of the website), and that is as far as my authority goes.... in much the same way I cannot change the way that the Google search website looks.

Clearly, I know someone who can - but it is NOT any of the 3 active Forum Admins.

You ask "How does this help the advancement of our cars? Or the forum? Eveything on elanchips is now legacy." Basically, as long as ANYONE on here uses "elanscan", then it is helping the advancement of the cars, forum and community.

There are hundreds, thousands or even millions of 'dead-end' links on the internet, I have no control over any of those either, so will not be removing any of them.

However, I do have control over a fair few websites, and am happy to maintain those in my own time, for free, for the benefit of others (including YOU).

Apologies if you feel offended. That is not my intention, ever.

I'm not demanding anything on this thread or the other. I am setting out what I believe are complete failings.
Should that "we" not include me?

It is a request and a discussion regarding the request. The title of the other thread is
"Request To Delete Mountain Chips Link"

You have made it very clear ....

1. Its not happening

2. It never can happen as the links at the top cannot be changed.
If you had stated this at the onset there would be no request or discussion.

Again, i'm sorry if I offended. I hope one day to meet and I will be the 1st one to buy you a beer

(I'm happy to put a link to elanchips on WikiLEC if you pm me access rights)

Nothing noble about it. If you think people emailing elanchips for 2+yrs from arriving at the site from this forum and never receiving the courtesy of a single reply is acceptable, you are entitled to your own view. Others see it differently.

No, you are not an admin. I think the context is clear.

Apologies, I read it that the "we" was a collective of forum members that would also include myself. I now know this is not the case.

I have reflected and I still think the forum should not be promoting it. Elanscan is of huge importance. It is already well documented on WikiLEC. More documented that what is on elanchips.co.uk

The sale of chips is another matter. All it would take is a message on the site stating it is not taking orders. or an autoresponse to an email. But is does neither and has not done for 2+yrs. Is that acceptable? It is dead. (in my and others opinion)

But all this is now irrelevant. Even if the consensus was for it (or any other top link) to be removed, It cannot. If the elanchips domain were to lapse and somebody was to slap up some porn on it (due to the value of its aged backlink) there is nothing anyone can do.

Thank you for your contribution, it looks like you've done enough already.

My contribution is about stirring debate. (good or bad, depending on how you look at it)
If you have access to WikiLEC, the elanscan link has been dead since Aug 2018 and needs updating.

My offer still stands. Happy to help. I have been building sites for 21yrs and ran my own server for 15 of them.

In case anyone really needs chip upgrade there was someone on the FB site selling one for an SE (not sure of type of ECU) last week so maybe if your desperate to get a chip you could buy that one if it is not already sold.

Right, at risk of being seen as autocratic, the time has now come to make some simple-to-understand statements about the "Mountain Chips" link on the LEC website - and I hope that this will prevent any further comment or debate (as I've actually got better things to do than keep explaining things to people who wish to be semantic and/or pursue their own opinion.)

(1) - The link goes to an external website, hosted and controlled by Alan McNicol, and the contents are beyond my control - it contains an awful lot of useful information, NOT just a link to a shop which doesn't get answered. (which I agree could be an annoyance).

(2) I have no direct control to the servers on which LEC is hosted, and thus cannot change any of the base contents....... I do know someone who has that access, so rest assured that should Alans site suddenly become a link to dodgy porn it will be dealt with extremely quickly...... probably well before anyone on here realises what has happened, as the server owners keep things fairly secure anyway (and if you already know where we are hosted you will understand that!).

(3) Likewise, I have no control over anything on the Wiki (other than what I have written and entered) - I didn't have any input in setting it up, nor do I have any control over who may or may not post..... but again, I know who does. I cannot simply send anyone details to allow you 'entry', and instructions on how to gain such access are on the front page.

(4) from the above, you may actually be wondering what is the point of me being here if I can't actually do anything to or for the website????

Well, I am simply one of the Forum Administrators - LEC is so much more than the Forum, and I only have "some" control over a small part. The site was setup well before I owned an elan, and I will always defer to how I believe that Doug (and Sy) would have dealt with it...... and in that vein, Whilst Doug can still see how this is going, I think that many of us know exactly how Sy would have dealt with this issue a while ago - and he is quite probably saying to himself, "It's about time, Pinky - get a grip and stop all this messing about bollox".

(5) so, with that in mind, let me explain what I CAN do - I can control access to the forum - and that includes issuing a temporary or permanent ban on making any posts, I can do that without any notice, and I can do it as and when I see fit, with no recourse from anyone who doesn't like it...... I have never had to do so much as a 3-day 'cooling off' period, let alone anything drastic, and hope that I won't ever need to - but if required, rest assured, I will.

Hopefully, this will be the end of it.
