Throttle cable re-sleeve

The outer jacket of my throttle cable was cracking and looking quite tatty. Standard heatshrink shrinks 2:1, which means even before its shrunk, it is still too small to slide over the nuts/washers and nipple, but heatshrink can be found with 3:1 and 4:1 shrink ratios.
I purchased a length of 3:1 heatshrink , unshrunk diameter 12.7mm from ebay. Looks like all 3:1 and 4:1 are glue lined, which may be a good thing, but I used brake cleaner solvent to wash most of the glue out, just in case the glue worked its way into the cable and caused problems. 12.7mm is just large enough to pass the end cable nuts if they are taped flat to the cable inner and pulled through. The end cable washers are too large to pass through, so cut them off the cable and used a pair of slotted stainless washers during the re-fit. Its possible that larger diameter 4:1 heatshrink may pass the original washers making the refurb really easy.

I think the cable measured 5.8mm diam, so using the 3:1, the largest diameter that would shrink tight was 12.7mm. I did remove all the remaining bits of cracked jacket back to near the power steering reservoir to give a smooth finish.

The heatshrink wall is quite thick, thicker and tougher than the normal 2:1 heatshrink, which helps it take the bend very well.

Not for me thanks. I added lightness and only used heatshrink at both ends of a pvc tape wrap. It was standard 2:1, stretched over the end of the cable with Hellerman pliers.

Suppose I’ll have to do mine now. I was going to take off the car, remove what left of the original and spray paint the outer with high temp black. But now ... decisions decisions
