I made a mistake

Postby tangara » Wed 28.04.2021, 12:02

Hello to all lotus enthusiasts
Looking for a horn problem, I unfortunately let the ignition ON for several hours....
And, as I tried to start the car the day after: starter motor runs, sparks at plugs and pump relay working !
As this relay is badly located, I 've not yet tested output current.
Do you think long time with ignition ON could have destroyed the pump?
Oh, by the way, there is not alarm on my atmo M100.
Thank you for your help

You should be able to hear the pump whir when the ignition is first switched on as it builds fuel pressure for the injectors .. if it's silent investigate the pump. (It will hold pressure in the fuel rail for some time so there needs to be a long time interval before you can listen for it again.)

Thank you.
Took the plastic cover off and had a look at inertia switch and relay.
Ok 12 V
On top of pump ther is a connector with 3 wires:( I think one for sender unit, one for 12V pump and ...) I can't find this 3 way connector and the schema on my tech Cd
Thanks

Not sure what a 'tech CD' is ... I've got the old fashioned Lotus Manuals on paper inside black ring binders. Section MJ Sheet 5 is Fuel Pump ..

The tech CD is a scan of old papre manual. Found it on e bay for 10£
Well it says that +12V coming from relay is white/green
On the schema from gauge it says from sender to gauge it is green/ black
There is a white one ??

British Standard BS-AU7 defines wiring colours and what they do... very useful to know when solving electrical problems... Lotus, being British, have always complied with it.
Google it and choose the version you prefer.. this one is quite useful

Thank you, colour code is very interesting.
Tomorrow, will extract fuel pump from tank and connect it outside (have to build a tool to diconnect pipes.

It's a plumber's tool for disconnecting push fit connectors - try a hardware shop. (much quicker)

Or even quicker still, on a Bank Holiday weekend, 2 small (jewellers type) screwdrivers inserted into the holes will release the fitting.... or 2 lengths of thin stiff wire, or 2 panel pins, or 2 thin-shank pop rivets...... you get the idea, I'm sure you must have something suitable in the shed.

Built the tool and one to turn off the big plastic screw. Pump and others out the tank.
On the bench the pump runs ....
Checked the wiring:
inertia OK,
WP wire from inertia to relay OK
Relay on the bench OK
Relay ground OK
And , WLG wire coming from ECM : no 12V

ECM could be defect ??

It is an atmo you know, think only 300 built, very common to find this specific part.
Your advice ?
Thank you

I don't understand your last comment tangara. Are you saying there were only 300 ECM's made or 300 fuel pumps? This can't possibly be true. Unless I've misread your comments????

Mark, I think that by “atmo”, tangara may mean he has a normally aspirated (NA) Elan - I’ve heard that phrase used in France before. No idea whether the figure for 300 NAs is correct, but I’m sure someone will :poke:

Aaahhh, that makes sense now Jonathan

And Geoff

But, I think there were only 129 NA's that came off the production line, unless I'm mistaken ? Clemo ?????

Sorry guys, french is quite different.
Yes , mine is NA and I think ecu is different but not sure.
Do you think
1) I can short circuit the +12V command on the relay to test pump, have pressure and try to restart the car. Just for test
2) there is a fuse or something alike on the ecu (for memory the trouble came as I kept ignition switch "on" for several hours)

Take a look at the “manuals” link at the top of this page, and check the Electrical Manual. Fuse A5 and relay M are for the NA ECM; worth checking those. The circuit diagrams are at the end of this manual; there’s one for the atmo ECM, and one for the fuel pump wiring.

Does this help you tangara ?

It does say ECM (turbo) though. I don't know what ECM (al) is though ????
