Any info on alternative to the sealant A100E6173 specified for the refitting of bearing caps 1 &5 ? £69 for 100g seems excessive. Will normal silicone gasket be OK or is there something special about this?

I don't quite understand the detail of the question, but for engine rebuilds I use locktite 5980 (black) for oil ie sump and the grey one for coolant - both available from Halfords.

Hi Simon, thanks for the reply. The Lotus manuals state the use of the A100E6173 compound which I was surprised to find was £69 for 100g at Lotus parts supplier, which I thought may have been implying it had some very special properties, but I guess not. I am happy to follow your lead with 5980, it doesn't contain acetic acid which is probably the important factor. Thanks
