Broke down today, wont start

Hi all, Ive had a look through but cant find anything specific.
Driving home today and engine suddenly cut out and management light came on.
Pulled over but she wont start. Turns over fine, battery all good, I can hear the fuel pump kick in.
Checked the switch next to the battery, fine. Further digging reveals no spark.
I put new coil packs on and new leads last year so unlikely to be that. Anyone got any ideas?

Do a paper clip test to download the last fault code.

And once you have established the fault codes, if any, disconnect the battery and reset the ECU.

Thanks for the replies, discovered the problem today.
Cam angle position sensor unit. Not familiar with this but the shaft has broken at its narrowest point. Managed to find the broken bits but possibly small bits of metal gone into the sump.
Is this a common fault, and does anyone know why here I can get a replacement?

Error code 41 used to get flagged up on here quite regularly in the past. Fortunately for some, the HES (Hall Effect Sensor) just required replacing. This was a very cheap £20 "must have" item which many people purchased "just in case" and is now gathering dust and cobwebs at the bottom of their toolboxes

Your problem sounds more of an expensive fix. I haven't heard of anyone having that particular problem either

A year or two ago, Michael from The Netherlands, had a complete CAS assembly available. It might be worth trying tk PM him to see if it is still available. I will try and find the link

There is a pin that holds the dog on, I’ve read that this can wear ( maybe this is what has broken) and some people have replaced it with a cut down 4 mm drill bit ?

Thanks for the replies,
I been trying to upload a pic of the broken part but file size too big.
I'm thinking of getting the cam belt and water pump done at the same time while its in the garage (not been done for at least 6 years).
Has anyone had any experience of using the SJS water pump or PNM one as they are about £50 as opposed to the original which is £150 plus.
What other bits will I need , tensioner, new bolts etc?

It's hard to see from the photo, but judging from the presence of the loose spring at the top of the picture, is it a 'simple' case of the end disc (with the 'drive' tabs) coming adrift from the shaft or is some metal bit actually snapped off?

If it is 'simply' the assembly has fallen apart, it can be fixed by drilling through the holes in the outer and inner shaft, and fitting a new rollpin of the correct diameter to suit the new (round, not oval) hole...... or for an exact fit, cut off a piece of the drill bit you used and that will work! - remembering to refit the spring before assembly.

The shaft inside there tapers to a narrow point which is obvs the weakest part and it has just sheared. I've ordered a new assembly from SJS. Just shy of 400 but need the car back ASAP.

Just had the new CAS assembly fitted and everything seemed ok to start with, no mis fire or anything but went for a longer drive today and somethings not right.
Whenever I had to stop the engine kept cutting out, wouldn't idle and engine mgmt light coming on but restarted each time.
Also speedo not working. The needle just bobbing around between 0 - 10 mph.
Any ideas anyone?

I'd be checking the little retaining bracket where the speedo enters the gearbox is actually there and doing its job. If the speedo is detached or bouncing around on top of the gear then the ECU is not getting a consistent signal and thus giving you the symptoms you describe. It doesn't sound like the speedo cable is broken although they do fray from time to time. You can get to the speedo (just) by reaching down the back of the engine. You may also be able to see it using a torch.

That's where I would start.
