Smell of petrol

Postby GreasyJoe » Sat 21.08.2021, 17:15

New owner. Notice smell of petrol in the cabin. I’m having the car inspected and waiting for the results, but thought I’d ask if anyone knows of common areas for fuel leaks etc?
Had mentioned to the garage to check. They said it may be from tank vent, but will be inspecting the car. Seems a bit strong i thought

Could be the fuel pipe connections with the fuel filter which are found behind a cover plate in the hood storage area.

Thanks KenS. Would make sense as it’s in the cabin, whether standing still or driving. Not noticeable with the hood down which makes even more sense.
If not picked up by the garage, I’ll definitely investigate.
Cheers

It could also be a cracked fuel filler pipe. This would be more noticesble if you have just brimmed the car with petrol

When I brought mine home I filled up and parked on my sloping driveway and fuel came out, bought a tank thinking it was cracked and took to local specialist who changed it but turned out to be the tank opening seal had nt been fitted properly on the original….

Cheers Kipperozzy. Was that only after taking the tank out it could be seen or was there another way of checking?

Hi GreasyJoe, when garage removed original tank it was pressure tested and found to be ok but they noticed the seal had t been fitted properly. I think the seal incorrect installation could have been discovered without taking the tank out.
Suggest smearing rubber or silicon grease on the seal before refitting and ensure inlet and outlet pipes are correctly orientated or the float can foul in the tank

This was exactly the cause when I had the same problem, it progressed to fuel randomly pooring out from underneath the car (randomly).

The AA man replaced the fuel lines for free.
