Injectors

Postby nicowalker1 » Sat 23.10.2021, 11:11

Hi everyone, I hope you’ve enjoyed getting out and about with your Elans this summer!

I wondered if we can have a post with the various makes and part numbers for replacement injectors and how you find performance afterwards.
If there’s enough response, I’ll update the wiki page.

I replaced mine with a set from ebay, this gave a rough idle and I swapped back to the originals. I am now looking to replace again but don’t want to pay SJs prices. I’m looking at getting some from rock auto but am unsure which to go for. Any help is appreciated.

:D I also got a set on flea bay (probably the same supplier as yours) mainly because my car used to start lovely first thing but later in the day e.g after an event it used to really struggle
Changing them cured this fault, so there was obviously an issue, but I'm thinking maybe the best thing would have been to get the originals looked at/cleaned by a quality firm ?
Maybe that would be a waste of time :smt102 :poke:

Sorry Nick slight tangent

I got mine cleaned a number of years ago, and it certainly improved things. The flow test results showed that they had clogged up a bit, and not evenly.....

...... however (as I indicated to Nick elsewhere), I wouldn't turn down a set of new injectors IF I knew they would work as well as the OE ones (when new!) - if only to help to future-proof the car.... I am aware that injectors can pick up faults with little or no notice, so would like to replace mine whilst they are still working, so I have a spare set......

I have heard various stories of eBay or Rock Auto ones working or not working, so the "part number" may not be enough to get good ones.

If anyone has used a particular aftermarket unit, I'd like a recommendation. (Not necessarily UK based!!!).

(I wonder where my old 'spare set' went?????)

I bought a set from eBay fuel injectors plus part no 191637275013 a month or so ago as they were recommended by someone on here. Seem to work fine, steady tick over pulls well.

I’ve kept my old injectors just in case.

My only slight concern for those is that the advert says they have a flow rate of 310-315, whilst the NA Elan uses 320 and the Turbo 325 (mine were measured at 323 when cleaned).....

...... no problem under most conditions, but if 'on the limit' could cause the engine to run very slightly lean.

Anyone got thoughts on that????????

I had a set cleaned by Injectortune in Devizes in November 2019 . I had found one injector passing fuel .
I do my test with the fuel delivery header attached to the inlet and return line but sitting on the cam covers in a small baking tray with newspaper in it. Pressure gauge fitted to the inlet line.
Ignition on to pump up the pressure then walk away for 15 minutes. Any injector not sealing are obvious.

Report came back and flow rates given as 340cc/min at 3 bar .

I checked them all as above for drips and they seemed good.

With having high CO i retested this year and found no3 injector dripping again.

Ive just fitted a set of flea bay injectors £139 from Miami. i think they cost about £160-£170 (cant remember now) with postage and duty etc.
flow rate 320cc/min at 3bar stated. Genuine Rochester Product -- whatever that means.

Also converted to closed loop now and have struggled a bit getting the engine running steady at idle. CO down to 0.5% though.

I now have it running reasonably at idle after chasing all the ECU wiring through. Although i don't really know why its running better.

One thing i did notice when i have been inspecting the injection system is some small black particles in the inlet header, One particle around the size of loose tea leaves!
It was crumbly but I cant help but wonder if the fuel line is suffering from new petrols attacking its inside surface. There is a new fuel filter in the system.

I can't categorically recommend these injector yet -- waiting for a road test.

My ebay injectors tested today and seem to be good. Certainly better than the original set in the car that I had cleaned.

I have sent the original set back to Injectortune in Devizes as they have offered to retest them and ive asked for a particular inspection of No.3 injectors pintle valve and seat. That's the one ive found passing twice.

The car is now driveable and the CO is low. It feels far smoother now and doesn't stall at junctions. My ebay injectors cost just under £160 in total .

Can i suggest to anyone looking for injector cleaning and flow testing etc Injectortune at Devizes in Wiltshire,
I had mine cleaned in 2019 but as i have a problem i have just returned them for retest. I agreed to pay the postage .
They have sent a video of the test and confirmed the flow and seal is good. New O rings on as well.

So initial (2019) clean was £58. Retest £10 . It cost me £4 to send them via Royal Mail. They also include a report on flow rates and balance before and after.

I would suggest this is a vary reasonable firm to deal with and the costing is difficult to fault.

I had a drip from one injector when left at pressure. But i also had some particles in the fuel rail.

The most important part is that they are 2 Ohms as that dictates the shape of the delivery 'wave'. For ease of imagination consider 2 ohms to open instantaneously and have a rectangular wave and 6 Ohms to open gradually and be a hump. The relationship between Ohms is not linear and a small deviation from 2 will have a much greater effect.

The flow rate is just the maximum height of the wave.

Consider the variable time.
With a 2 Ohm injector you will get a rectangle whose area is proportional to time.
With a 6 Ohm injector the shape of the hump varies with time

This is a rough explanatiom but the point is that the fuel map would need to be different if the Ohms vary.

The difference in flow rate is what you calibrate out with the CO pot

The engine will idle ok with pretty much any injector the engine is running slowly and you adjust for smooth idle - good idle is no measure of the suitability of an injector. Like a broken clock it will be right at one point.
