Engine died pulling out of garage yesterday

Started down the driveway after backing out of the garage and the engine lost power quickly and died. Tried to restart but engine just cranked. Drifted back into the driveway and the engine light was on. Put in the plug and tried to get the code. I got the 12 flash but nothing else. The engine restarted and Pulled out a short distance and it did it again. I got the car to finally restart again to make it back into the garage. Working the gas the engine would run a little. Tried to pull the code and again nothing but 12.

Will hook up the elanscan and see what is happening. Feels like fuel.

Check IAC position and Coolant temp on elanscan.

My guess is also engine temp sender.
This runs from 1 sender but not the one which sends to your instrument panel. When it fails, it can fail cold, (about -38c) which is just above the "out of range" reading of -40c which the ECU understands as an error, so it has no reason to doubt it is actually -38c & it fuels the engine accordingly.
So it is like a carburetted engine trying to run on choke while warm & this would also explain why the engine runs again after it has cooled a little.

If this is the issue, you should see it on Elanscan before you even start the engine.

It sounds a lot like fuel starvation to me - it seems that the pump is working well enough to fill the pressure rail initially, but fails to keep up with demand......

This could be a worn pump, a blocked filter (or any of the pipework between tank and fuel rail) or even (though less likely if it gets the required pressure to start the car) a bad fuel pressure regulator.

Could there possibly be water in the tanK? (what level is the fuel anyway?)

Just a few random thoughts, and it could easily be a sensor problem as others have said - but I'm a bit old-school and always suspect something which has happened to me previously!

Hooked up elanscan tonight. Did a few sets and have to go over all the numbers in excel. I show 4 faults but none of the items are showing on.

Still feels like fuel. It had been a few years since I did a filter... maybe??? When I had the tank replaced years ago it got a new fuel pump.

When I started the car tonight the engine ran and then died out. Cranked over the engine and it seemed to be fuel. The engine would catch and then crank, repeat same a few times and then start.

When running at idle the engine would fall off and then come back for a moment and then try to fall off again or just die. Increase rpm and engine ran smoother. Still think it is fuel. After 20 min of test running the engine was no longer falling off and smooth. Still the test is driving with the demands on the fuel system.

Check coolant temp against ambient at startup to check the CTS.

The IAC valve will adjust the tickover so that it is on target. The number of clicks helps to diagnose the issue.

Well, something fundamental for this car. I had experienced the same issue a couple of times. First of all, you should check the IAC position, as Simon_P said, as it's one of the most common causes for this issue. If everything is ok with the IAC, check the coolant temp. We all know these cars have a problem with that, and I still cannot figure out how to fix it. In your case, it should be an issue with the coolant temp, and I'm sure with that.
