After market wheels for S1

Postby Nemesis » Mon 31.10.2022, 03:58

Found these online,
CMS C24 Silver 15 x 6,4 x 100, ET +50 mm. ,bore 67.2 mm.

These will leave 10 mm. clearance at edge of guard. Will need hub spigots 67.1 to 56.6 mm. to fit.

Anybody on here tried these ?

I can now report that the CMS C24 wheels are a perfect fit. There was only one small problem with fitting the wheels to the front suspension. The outer face of the brake calipers has a prominent vertical spine which is a casting artifact. This ridge fouls the wheel spokes. A few minutes with an angle grinder & a belt sander removed 8 mm. of this ridge & now there is adequate clearance. The original bolts can be used.
A few hundred km.'s of hard driving revealed no problems. I took the opportunity to increase the castor to 3 degrees which is used for modern cars and adjusted to a smidge of toe-out at the front. The overwhelmingly bland handling is now much more what a Lotus should have & the turn-in is brilliant. I run fast road tyres so the overall performance is better than a new car.

Those C24s look really nice but I'm not confident to be grinding stuff off the caliper to make them fit; I can't picture myself grinding 8mm from a ridge of the caliper casting...

If that +50 ET offset means that they're -10mm too far into the w/arch(?) can't there be something like a spacer to push them further out again in order to avoid that drastic 'surgery'?

I've been looking at MINI and MG/Rover wheel suggestions in order to 'go 16"'. I think they should fit the w/arches better, plus my tyres are ~4years old so no tyre shop will transfer them and I'd have to bite the bullet to fit new tyres in any case...but our +60mm offset seems a step too far! - Also it seems that the wheel centre bores would have to be enlarged due to those unique wheel specs we've inherited :( .

The newer design of those S2 16" wheels seem to tick all my boxes. Is there a reason that they can't be re-manufactured, I wonder?

One of the reasons I'm 'looking' is that I really enjoyed grinding away the inevitable corrosion and refurb'ing my own MG wheels - getting a local firm to take-off and subsequently re-fit the tyres - whilst I bought a set off eBay to use while the originals were off the car - which I managed to sell later. This avoided the need to spend big bucks and, just as importantly, gave immense d-i-y / I did it myself satisfaction...

Personally I don't really want to buy new or 'wrangle' something new - just bolt on a set of wheels whilst I take the originals off to do a refurb (like I've done before). Why is it so complicated for the m100? (I keep asking myself this...)

Chris, you wouldn't be able to swap tyres over anyway as current ones are 15" and you're going to 16"!

And in addition 16" wheels will not fill the arch any more as the tyre profile will change to retain the same accuracy on your speedo. Ie the overall wheel/tyre diameter remains the same.

It works the other way around unfortunately.
To go from 50 ET to 60 ET you'd need to machine 10mm off the flange off the wheel (where it meets the brake disk)

With a 10 mm space you'd go from ET50 to ET40 and that is in the wrong direction :-)
The higher the ET, the more the wheels slide over the hub so to say...

I had these 16" R50 Mini wheels on my old SE for a while and they were absolutely fine on the road, the centre bore is slightly smaller so that needed doing but other than that they fit straight on. Widely available
for very little money, a worthy option if you just need a cheap set of wheels.

Thanks Jamie N. Yep, those look a really good alternative to me.

...ET +48mm, 4 x 100mm PCD AND 56.1mm centre bore (ours is ET +60 + 56.6 apparently)...

They fill the w/arches better but can the centre bore be easily 'done' at home with a Dremmel stone, say, or is this a specialist job? How did you overcome this?

It only needs a tiny bit off Chris, you could virtually tighten the bolts and make it an interference fit if you had to (which you wouldn't obviously) but it shows how little needs removed, I just went round it gently with a similar
thing to this in a variable speed electric drill... http://toolsandmore.us/images/products/ ... 1D0810.jpg , just keep checking it until its sitting nicely on the hub.
There was also no discernible issue regarding the 12mm difference in offset that I could detect, it drove absolutely fine.

Fredjohn and HJ - thanks really useful info. And Jamie N that flap wheel tool looks much more 'sympathetic than a dremmel stone. Good, too, to hear of your experience that the 12mm offset distance wasn't an issue.

Thanks folks. It's great to collect together all your inputs in order to be aware that other MINI 16" 4 studs with ET 48 and 56.1 centre core will be relatively easy to modify and live-with too.

Hmmm...I'm certainly being drawn to this...ideas are being crystallised...

I'll certainly inform of any subsequent developments ( - 'cos it's what we do, innit?)

While my S2 alloys were being refurbed, had a set of MG ZR 17" on, bought a cheap router to change the centre bore size. But the tyres were 205 45 17 so a bit over size for the car - 205 40 17 would probably have been better.

Aw I'd have thought 17"-ers would limit turning circle, scuff the wheel arches + make for even heavier steering etc - or would that be down to the over-wide tyres, I wonder?

They have a lower offset than the original so fit a bit further out, did not have a problem. S2 original tyres are 205 anyway. The discs on my car are the original - not the larger improved ones...

Yes, they work quite well too...so is there any downside with these 17"-ers?

eg stiffer sidewall + harder to steer? expensive tyres? 'crashey' over bumps? etc
