Alternator removal.
The basic procedure is in the wiki but I'd add the following suggestions.
1. check if you can unplug the alternator from above in situ (as for changing the oil filter) if you can't you can do it once you have removed the bolts and more importantly plug it back in before reassembly.
2. To remove the PAS reservoir empty as much fluid as you can with a turkey baster, loosen the hose clamps, loosen the hoses but don't disconnect them. Put a bowl on the cam cover, then in one movement pull the reservoir up sharply to disconnect from the hoses and put it straight into the bowl this minimises the oil slick
3. Remove the PAS hose clamp on the underside of the longeron, loosen the bolt holding the clamp on the bulkhead but do not remove it. This allows sufficient movement of the PAS hose for it to be pushed rearwards allowing just enough room to remove the alternator see picture below:

Thick arm tucked in rearwards, thin arm swings past the crank pulley. Notice the PAS hose pushed up and to the rear.

I have now added the first video to my original post. This alternator is similar to ours he has minimal tools and it shows that it isn't a difficult job. Please don't use his method of removing the pulley nut with screwdrivers it is a really bad idea. I hold the pulley (suitably protected) in a vice put a spanner on the nut and hit the spanner with a hammer you want an impact action to remove the nut a breaker bar will probably just load everything up until it slips. Be aware that if the pulley slips in the vice the whole lot could end up on the floor.

The rubber cover for the brush box might need a nick out of it to fit the new brush box snugly. I didn't bother and a very slight difference between the old and new brushbox makes it sit slightly proud at the base.

For ease of assembly, attach the brushbox to the VR with 1 screw. Put a long screw into the end of the VR and screw it onto the alternator just a couple of turns. Now swing the VR into position and drop the other long screw in.

These are just my observations whatever you do is at your own risk!

For the Sake of Completeness as well as intentionally refreshing this extremely helpfull thread.

after 3 years my alternator did pack in, and lucky me found that the rectifier diode bridge was likely broken on mine.

ive contacted the helpfull fellas at https://www.rotatingelectrics.co.uk/ and exchanged pictures of the rectifier bridge with measurments and they came back with a perfect fit replacement

the box where my bridge came in had a label with RTF49844 which upon google search i found a "partner" company to rotatingelectrics selling at https://www.woodauto.com/product/RTF49844

ive also made videos of the process of
removing the subframe (release 4th Feb)
removing the alternator (release 4th Mar)
taking the alternator apart and replacing the pieces included in this kit. (temporarily unlisted, with release 1st Apr)

some of the videos are not public yet, as they are part of my channel's release schedule, but im leaving the links here because if i dont i will forget to add them.

unfortunately, i have had an unexpected outcome of this job, and at the moment my alternator seems to be outputting voltages that are WAY too high.
I have raised a different post to address that, which may or may not be merged back here depending on how the Forum admins perceive the relationship between the problem and the VR provided in this kit.

personally i tuck the PAS reservoir out of the way after removing just the PAS reservoir bracket.
No need to empty the PAS fluid for an alternator swap :D

The refurb-kit already worked perfectly a couple of times for me :-)

that is exactly what i ended up doing when re-installing the alternator. and will be doing that again if i need to remove it again (which seems likely)

its good to know the refurb kit has worked for someone else without issues.
i just need to figure out why my refurbished unit is not regulating its output well.

that rectifier diode pack is knackered. i mean.. pretty badly.

il have a look if i can find details of the replacement part. i have my old one which i believe is good. but i cannot be sure tbh as when i had my issues i done brushes then follow with regulator... then diode pack.. and finally the stator (its all on youtube)

Simon.

ive sent you an email directly with the exchange of emails with the parts supplier.

they were a bit vague about what they sent. but i believe it was this
https://www.rotatingelectrics.co.uk/pro ... u-mob-rn01

just email them directly from my forwarded message. it shoudl be enough details for them to supply you with the right thing

Brilliant - thank you for that. It was a bit crusty and parts flaked off the top (although it looked quite good underneath). I soon realised i couldn't go any further as I didn't have a vice to hold the pulley in so i'm in no hurry.

You can test the diodes - see videos in the first post.
