I am please to say that I have replaced the cam belt. My success is confirmed by the car starting instantly when the job was done. Such a relief.
May I express my heartfelt thanks for the advice that is available here and also for Toby's videos which took me through it step by step.
My only addition to the learning is that I made a tool to hold the bottom pulley whilst I undid the big bolt. A 30 inch length of 3mm steel, 50mm wide with a clearance hole for a 17mm socket and two holes to line up with the holes in the pulley. Worked a treat. Only two 10mm Allen keys were injured in the doing of the job.

Great stuff and congratulations John!
My first cam belt job was on the M100 with the info here on LEC as well

No Tony video’s insight back in the days though

I bought my first air impactdriver for this job, still goes like stink (HAZET) after many, many timing belts later.

Good to hear
I've done a few now ~ my brace has a similar spec. to yours, but it's a rectangular steel tube
I used pantz' guide in the first instance
