Battery

Postby Simon_P » Mon 25.06.2018, 07:58

Hi All,

I know that there are 3 or 4 that could fit - 027 and 065 spring to mind, but there is nothing in the Wiki and I'm away at the moment so can't check my car.

Please can we put together a list of batteries for future reference - Sizes and comments below please, and I will compile them for a wiki entry.

Thanks,

Simon

Monty did the research a few years ago in the thread here:

As the other thread is a bit old (and poissibly out of date) I see no problem with 'current' battery ideas....

.... I have recently replaced mine as it wouldn't hold a charge for more than a day - so i did some research and went for an 075 (this is the size/shape designator), which is the 'newer' version of the 065 (which looks like an 027 to me!).

When looking, I noticed that they do a 'standard' 065/075 with 52Ah, or a 'High Capacity' with 60Ah and 570CCA.... it is Calcium Technology (which may well be superceded by now with some other snake oil contents), had a 4 year warantee and cost under £40 on my doorstep within 24 hours. (ebay special).

Fitted it the next day, and all well - then the day after, it was flat :(

Thought to myself "shouldn't have tried to save a few quid on a battery", and fitted the charger to see what would happen - it flashed an LED to tell me that there was a battery (charge) drain somewhere.... Oops - interior lights were on! must have been from when I was giving the car a good clean before Castle Combe, and went un noticed.

Still, looking on the bright side, I now have a new battery in the car, and a 'spare' one (which DOES hold a charge - but not if the lights are kept on!), and can use the car.

Just the one now, but this one's mine! - and it will be finished eventually..... - but also temporary custodian of a project until it is finished enough for Angie to drive it

Sounds like a similar story to the reason that we have two microwaves. I thought our ten year old one was bust and bought a new one. When I went to plug it in to replace of the old one I found that somebody had already unplugged the old one.
Oh well, our student son was most grateful for a microwave in his flat.

On the battery side, I’ve just bought one for our “modern”(ish) car, which eats batteries (3 in 8 years) so I went for a Halfords one (Yuasa Silver 110ah & 900cca) purely on the basis that they guarantee free replacement if it fails within 5 years.

eurocarparts have a discount code summer 70
Just bought a Duracell 075 for £43 with a 5 year guarantee. The code was supposed to run out yesterday but it just worked for me. Also bought some filters.

Battery USA fitment

Postby tigerdog » Fri 07.07.2023, 23:16

A bit of digging in the v.7 parts guide shows the original battery spec'd is a "Tungstone Type 27" as referenced above. More digging finds the dimensions of the type 27 to be
242L x 175W x 190H (mm)

According to the information on this site, the US (maybe North American) equivalent looks to be a "Group 47" battery. This has the terminals in the proper arrangement (positive on the right side) and what looks like the same ridges at the bottom as the fitted clamps would need.

Here's a link to a reference on the Interstate Batteries site, current as of 2023-07-07.

That's interesting to note - not so long ago I had someone ask me if they could use the battery from their (scrapped) VW, which was a Type27.

I looked at the dimensions and said that it may be too tall to fit in the battery compartment, as the type 65/75 was longer (not a problem) but the same width, and 15mm shorter in height.

So, maybe I was wrong, and it would fit.... but I'm sticking to my 075 ones.

one thing to note is that a taller battery may fit. but one of my cars has the connectors more stiff than the other and the battery is nearly flush at the top.

it fits. but its a right pain to swap.

as some of you know. im more interested in something being practical, safe and Efficient than "the factory recomendation".
Iv'e only bought 2 batteries for the elan over 9 years.. both were bought last year in novemenver for both cars at the same time the alternator stopped working. and i just got whatever ECP had listed as correct. and they work fine.

if i was going to look into it in detail. i would measure the area allocated and find the biggest thing available for that slot with reasonable clearance at the top for my hands to make disconnecting the terminals easy.
one thing to note about them is that they are meant to be locked in place by a small metal braket that holds them from the bottom.

as times goes by. i am correcting more and more issues in the electrical systems of the NA. and i found the battery originally installed was too big and too powerfull for the car. replacing with something more within its specs highlithed issues in the electrical system which have been addressed since them.

i probably should put some text in that thread with all the little things done

If battery height is a concern and you're based in the USA or someplace that can cross-reference USA battery "group", then a Group 42 might do the trick. It's the same footprint as a Group 47/ UK 027, but 175mm high instead of 190mm.

This is a useful comment for anyone with the Kuching hoops because getting the battery in and out past the tubes is very tricky. A lower battery might help.
