Temperature control knob

When I turn the temperature control knob clockwise from cold towards hot (engine not running) , the knob will not go beyond about 2 o'clock into the red but feels as if it is pushing against a spring.

Is this normal please?

it should move further.

you sure that onyl happens when engine is not running and not always ?

the springy feeling is normal at the end of travel but end of travel should be further... something like 4 or 5 oclock position

the dial just operates a lever that moves backawads tohards the bulkhead. if the lever is not attached correctly to the dial mechanism you can find limited travel. i did have mine in that situation for a while because i didnt attache it correctly the first time i removed the fascia panel

Yes, you are right; it happens all the time. Strangely both my cars have the same issue, both stopping at 2 o'clock.

just a small correction there. instead of "lever". I think its best described as a metal rod. the movemenr is in the same direction of the rod. blame that on the language barrier

This is the other side of the heater dial.

The dial rotates the rotary control pinion, which in turn drives the control quadrant, which pulls the temp control link rod forwards or backwards.

When I bought my car, I had two problems: the link rod was unclipped from the quadrant, and the pinion assembly had fallen through the dash, so it wasn’t contacting the quadrant properly. (The knob was lying in the footwell).

I solved the first problem by pushing the rod back through the hole in the control quadrant and making sure the clip was fully in place. You’ll find that a 12-year-old pianist has the right finger dexterity for this task, if you happen to have one around The pinion through the dash needed a bit more work, and I fitted a detent on the heater knob frame to prevent the pinion falling through again. So far, it’s worked!

Just an additional thought: I can usually reach through the radio aperture to clip and unclip the rod on mine.

i cant do that, and i wouldnt describe my hands as any bigger than the average male.

i removed the ashtray for this job.. but removing the ashtray is a bit of a gamble becasue they are usually very well glued and wont came out without help from a blade from the oposite side cutting the glue.

i did that when i had the panel out. as it was a no brainer considering i dont smoke (who does these days ?) and that panel gap is nicely positioned if i ever need to replace the fuses behind it... a little blue tack and the ashtray went back in and stays as long as i pull it carefully

In my case, I can’t use the ashtray route, because that’s where I’ve fitted the switches for the fuel flap, tonneau and boot electric releases.

Easy for a man of your talents. Switches from an Audi TT fit neatly in the ashtray. Ignition feed and direct feed for three relays. Three solenoids and a bit of bike cable piggybacked onto existing openers which I left as a backup. I fitted a changeover relay as well, so I can’t open the tonneau or the fuel flap if the ignition is on - but you wouldn’t have to.
