Unused connectors in the engine bay & more questions

Just asking again, in case anyone has found answers.....I see there are unused connectors with a black and purple wire on both sides of the engine bay, just behind the light pods. (this has been mentioned a few times previously, such as post 3498)

The black cable is ground, but the purple wire is unknown. I have looked through the wiring scheule without success.....anyone got any clues as to where the purple wire goes?

Does anyone know the best way to get a wire from the engine bay to the instrument panel - after a scare, I want a fan override switch!

I fitted a fan override switch, but I didn’t run a wire to the engine bay. I connected into the fuse and relay panel under the dash cover on top of the instruments (terminal 85 on the cooling fan relay). I linked it up through an extra relay, so the fans will run for 10 minutes and then switch off automatically. The fan override switch is a standard aircon switch, converted so it doesn’t latch on (like a horn button). Here’s the revised sheet 18, showing my additions:

Fan overide switch:

A timed switch or relay module would be a good idea, just so you dont leave it switched on and flatten the battery!

My car has some electrical mods on it where the fan relay is in the engine compartment, looks like a bodge job to me. Good suggestion about looking under the instrument panel cover for the original relay - i hadn't thought of that. I will have a look under the cover.

Easiest way to do a fan override switch is to ground the right leg on the fan relay in the instrument binnacle. Clemo did a write-up some years ago.

No. S2 is different from NA/SE (e.g. SE has an interior lights delay timer, while S2 has a lights on warning buzzer).

The “Manuals” tab at the top of every Forum page has circuit diagrams for both variants.

Just in case anyone needs the info, I have identified the type of connector used under the bonnet for things like the headlamp lift motor, O2 sensor and the various unused connectors.

They are all Delphi Weather-pack types, which are available on ebay, RS or Farnell.

I need some to sort the wiring to my fans.

its worth noting that althoguht jonathan is right.
the very early "opera headlamps" versions had more wires for the microswitches than the most comon cars
also worth noting that depending on your luck. the wiring for O2 sensors may be there or missing as far as the pre-S2 models are conserned.

my take is to not make any assumptions as to what you car has. and just always check before commiting to do any work around it
