No Rev Counter and rough running

Hi all

I have just got 'Lola' out of the Garage ready to get her back on the road after a couple of years being garaged. I have done a full service and changed leads, plugs, coil packs and now have her out and first MOT since 2021 just needs some attention to the rear brakes to get her through so thats great news.

However, she is running real rough and feels like its mis firing intermittently - oddly enough i have no Rev Counter readings at all - dead as a dodo. Not sure if they are related to a sensor issue. I suspect the problem lies in a blocked injector - after a good glug of injector cleaner in the tank she is running better but not quite there yet. I have manged to get an ElanScan reading but after a short while the computer started beeping and telling me it could not connect.. soooo looking for some help

1. Where does the Rev Counter source its signal from ? CAS
2. Any tips on cleaning the injectors or is it a case of removing them ?
3. I am going to dive into the abyss of elan scan and drivers in a sec but if there are any tips?

As soon as i get her sorted its time to attend to some other cosmetics and resto jobs but glad to have her back up and running .. well sort of..

any help gratefully received

I'm just emerging from the abyss of Elanscan drivers, battered and bruised but a tiny bit wiser...
Here's what worked for me on Laptops up to Windows 10, I don't have Windows 11 so I haven't tested this yet:

If you're running Windows 10 version 22H2 or newer, or plugging your cable into a USB3 port, these Driver settings worked for me. Not perfect as there are still a few missed data points, but acceptable:

USB Transfer Sizes:
Receive (Bytes): 64
Transmit (Bytes): 64
Latency Timer (msec): 32

If you're using an older Laptop with USB1/2 ports and/or it's running a Windows 10 version prior to 22H2 or older (8.1, 8, 7, Vista, XP, 2000, NT, Windows 98, 95)

Latency Timer (msec): 1
all other driver settings as default

If you're not sure what type of USB ports you have, just try both and see what works for you.

1 - assuming you have a turbo model. the signal for the rev counter comes from the spark control unit (the place where the coil packs attach to)
2 - cant help there
3 - elanscan seems a lotery when it comes to working. theres a long thread that is still ongoing with mlutple people having issues. i only tried using one a few months ago which i borrowed from a NELOC member and i followed the instructions in pinky's website and my lenovo laptop with windows 10 worked on first attempt.

i have a spare unit of the sparks control. but with you being in devon is a bit far to travel to attempt swapping that one to rule out that issue.
