Window switches

These are the window switches fitted to my SE Turbo.........are they original?

Richmmm, these are mine on a '90 SE Turbo - and from wrangling stuff for the best part of the last 2years I've come to he conclusion that it's pretty much unmolested (except by my replacing worn-out bits...)

Each switch has rounded parts and the bit with the white blob illuminates when the lights are on. I could probably zoom-in further but I think this pic sufficiently outlines our differences?

Thanks for the quick reply........What colour are the switches? They look a bit brown. I have a issue with the passenger window failing, so i thought my switches were wrong and i planned to replace them with OEM parts.

their grey, the brown you see is probably just a result of the light from the picture.

OEM have amber lights where you may want red leds inside in order to match the rest of the interior lights. but thats just a matter of personal preference.

im sure you will find threads on the forum telling you what other GM cars chare the part. I would be looking at vauhals from the era. the mirror control unit i believe comes from a frontera, the instrument cluster matches an astra van or the calibra, other interior bits are shared with the carlton (i cant rememebr which part)

The ones you have are from a Corsa D - I did the modification on mine when I saw the price of OE switches, and I'd run out of spares!

They work fine, but don't look the same. Hopefully, whoever did yours kept the original plug on the wiring loom and just connected the new switch wiring to it with spade connectors, so it can be reversed.

The original switches are 'slightly brown' in colour, and they can fade over time to make it worse. Vauxhall did them in the colour, as well as a much lighter brown, which is almost tan in colour.

I got a few switches re-made in China but they are very dark grey, almost black.... not noticeable if you change the pair.

If you want original style switches, then simply prise the ones out that you have and check the wiring is still intact, then it is a case of just swapping them over again.

The GM/Vauxhall window switches use the same electrical switch block across many models of that era, within different colours and shapes of plastic case and rocker covers.

It's quite possible to carefully extract a replacement switch block and put it into the original Elan case. A thin knife is useful to ease it past the locating tags and be aware that Elan plastic case is going to be 30 years old so brittle and not take too much bending - best to warm it up a bit first on a radiator. It saves having to swap both when one of the OE switches is still working fine.

I knew there would be a challenge with the colour, so I bought a pair on ebay for GBP 17.98.

There's a few of Elan M100's colour on ebay at the moment .. the donor vehicles being Vauxhall/Opel, Vectra A, Corsa B, or Astra F. Used around £8, new £12.
