Oil Cooler Dowty Seals (washer seals)

Hi all,

So the banjo bolts on the oil cooler are a 22mm head, but am I correct in understanding that they reduce down to the size of an M16? I read that here somewhere. Does that mean I need 4 M16 dowty seals vs M22 ones?

i know the information is on the forum somewhere.
I know many years ago... say probaby 6 i had an issue with the oil cooler and needed to replace it. the details are somewhere in the 10+ pages of progress of my Yellow car's thread.

search over the pages based on the timeframe with a find text for "oil cooler" may shed some light.. i guess the problem is that i dont know how long ago that happened and i certainly dont have Pinky's memory

M16 = approx 16mm id, 22mm od

With Metric threads where you see Mxx that's a size rather than a dimension so an M15 dowty washer fits an
M16 thread.

Matt, you are correct in your thoughts.....

..... the OE oil cooler is a 'standard' radiator (with standard dimensions) from an outside manufacturer. The mounting brackets are bespoke to the Elan, which is the only reason it can't be replaced in 10 minutes with an off-the-shelf item - albeit that it can be done with a bit of ingenuity and some aluminium sheet.

The 'standard' fitment for an oil cooler radiator is M22 female threads, but there is no room on top of the radiator to fit 'standard' barbed hose fittings, so a banjo fitting is used.

I don't know why they didn't use a 22mm banjo, but there must be a reason (because the narrower bore pipe fits a smaller banjo I suppose) - so the radiator fittings have a reducer bush screwed in to reduce the thread to M16.

so, short answer, yes you need 4x 16mm ID seals.

Thank you Simon and Dave, for confirming my suspicions. I suppose I can add to the wiki, since this information should be easily accessible and there's no point in spending extra GBP/$ on a piece that's available elsewhere.

And here's how I removed the oil cooler lines without draining PAS fluid. The suspension is out of the way though.
