Boost/Power problem

Postby nicowalker1 » Sun 14.04.2024, 12:25

I seem to have a lack of power. Unfortunately my elanscan cable must be knackered as I can’t get it to work even with the new drivers/software.
When accelerating from low revs eg 20-25mph in third the boost barely kicks in and the engine feels laboured. (I know the boost should kick in at higher revs, but it doesn’t). When accelerating from high revs boost kicks in most of the time.

If it was turbo or air leaking I would assume it would not be intermittent.
Tested the waste gate actuator with a pump and it seems pretty free.

It’s probably worth noting I don’t seem to get as much turbo stall flutter as I used to

Any ideas?

Fyi on elanscan cable, it takes me multiple tries of trying it out, selecting com port, and even jiggling the USB connection before it works.
For the missing boost...for me it's always been a vacuum leak. Do you think a small one somewhere would be enough to counter the pull while at low revs, but at high revs and bigger vacuum, it could be overcome?

interesting experoence with the cable. i made mine based on the video from toby and it always connects first time. everytime i had issues was actually the connections on the ftdi chip and not a proble with the computer or usb side of things

I’ve just ordered a load of silicone vacuum hose. I’ll replace the lot to rule it out.

It used to work ok. The cable was left in a damp shed over winter. I’ll give it another try.

I’ve just had a quick look and the black hose with blue stripes and the one with white stripes do appear to be perished. It will be great if it’s that easy to sort.

How common is it for the Intercooler/charge cooler to fail/leak?

The cable issue could be to do with recent windows updates.

There are several conditions that need to be met for the turbo to boost fully. There's a list in the manual. Low revs in 3rd isn't going to do much it's not a diesel. You need to be 3k revs plus if you expect any activity and 4/5k for so enthusiastic activity.
