Blackening external plastics ?

Postby simonbuk » Mon 13.05.2024, 23:11

Just wondering if you can renovate/blacken external plastics ? My rear number plate surround has 'greyed out' a bit. It would look good if it was back to shiny black plastic again !!

There are several products that work to blacken the rubber & plastic bits, I've used in a few in the past.
There's an aerosol called something like Back2Black I used to use on the black plastic bits on my BMW, but I now use a cream called Restore2Black which seems to last longer.

Same product that i used on my 'greying' rear light/number plate trims. Brought them back to looking new and still looks bob on over a year and several washes later.

my experience with these "restore to black" aerosols is that they work wonders.. for 1 or maybe 2 weeks and then your back to the same grey color.

what worked for me was something the paint shop told me about. its a aerosol called "black texture coating" this is what i purchased and used on the flaps that are above the rear light clusters. been 3+ years and its still holding the color. not to mention it works great on the rubber sills as well. there is some degree of flex with it i think, i used it on the hood stoawge compartment sill and im pleased with the result.

I used SEM bumper coater. There’s a cleaner, primer and coater. Works really well and lasts a very long time.

Remembering my parents bought me a Autoglym complete cleaning package many years ago - I went to find some of the products that I knew I had never opened.
Fortunately I found some 'bumper care' product.
Obviously I have no idea how long its going to last but makes it look better. Adds a shine to it but I have some marks on it and probably a bit of sunshine/UV damage.
So as Tuga suggests it might be better to cover the plastic with a coating to make everything even ?

Anyway, better than nothing and makes it shine a bit and it was FREE

lets hope it lasts.

I Never used the expensive branded ones. i usually buy stuff that doesnt rely on marketing to be sold. prices vary but, as mentioned, none of them ever lasted more than 2 sunny weeks for me
