Very smart looking S2 on ebay. Make a lovely Christmas present for someone. If it fetches close to this at this time of year then its got to be worth more in 6 months time.

red s1 with number plate covered. I went to see it last week. Needs a lot of work! headlight motors, all the roof seals need replacing, not one decent panel. engine bay very scruffy, o/s rear light cracked, for a 38k car, I was not impressed.

Stay clear mate. went to see it, awful. The guy has sold it 3 or 4 times, and still has it. It keeps dropping in price too

Yep. My post didnt get approved so I spent £200 on a inspection report (mainly distance and time). Crash damage OSR has flaking paint and notible cracking, mistery oil leak from gearbox area, crack in rear tail light, front bushes shot, tyres with cuts in them, rear discs and pads shot, rear light corrosion, hood seals shot, etc, etc, etc.

Here is the eBay item number:115830301596 for anyone who wants to comment some more on this, or try to goad me into taking it on :)

Too much for me, especially the body jobs....... Ill keep hunting for the dream :)

I went to look at this car the other day. grey, 1990 Elan for sale

Paint doesn't look bad apart from the scratch highlighted in the photos although the car was dirty when I looked at it. The B post caps were missing and the weatherstrips on the top of the doors were broken. Some of the fabric on the bottom of the driver's door doorcard was hanging down. The driver's seat cushion felt quite hard. The rest window was clear and the seals looked OK.

Driving it, it rode nicely taking bumps well but I did notice that on acceleration, the car pulled to one side a little and to the other side when lifting off. With the hood up and the windows shut there was a strong smell of hot fibreglass. I'm not sure what that was about. The heater fan worked on all speeds but, on the higher speeds, it was very noisy as though it was way out of balance. When it was running, I couldn't feel any air coming out of the vents.

The garage said they would get it MOT'd when it is sold which would sort out the headlamp motors, wipers and indicators.

They are asking £6995, which I think is too much. Any ideas what a rough value is?

You may not like my answer, but here it is.....

...... I don't think that £7k for a car from a dealer with a warrantee and a new MOT is outrageous.

As a dealer, they have to make a profit, and to do so, they have to sell for a slightly higher price than an individual will. In order to attract buyers, they thus need to offer a little bit more, like a shiny car, with a mechanical warrantee.

Think about any £7k dealer car.....19% Corporation Tax.... so the car is now down to being a £5882 car anyway if the car is all profit.

If the car isn't all profit, lets assume they start with a £5K car..... then have to get it to their premises (£150?), MOT it (£20) see what it fails on, and repair those issues (in this case, it could be £200 in parts and labour, or it could be £1000 - depends on what is causing the emissions problem and brake fluctuations....

Wash, hoover and prepare for viewings - do you count time as money or not? In a big place they will pay someone to do this stuff, in a smaller place it will be anyone's job and for a one man band, it is part of the daily graft.

Take an hour out of your day to show the car to someone..... at what cost? 1 hours wages, or part of the job?

Petrol, Insurance, Tax (or trade plate cover) for those tests.

Rent on the premises..... training for the mechanics...... calibration of MOT equipment..... liability insurance...... tools..... electricity..... etc

Oh, and food for the table, which is the only reason they do all the rest.

If it is a garage that relies on quick turnaround, then they will buy cheap, add on £500 and sell it on...... but if they don't shift 10 cars a week, they loose money (probably need to sell more than that these days), so they get other income from the Servicing, Repair and MOT side of things, and accept that the stock they keep will either make them a few quid if they sell "as is", or may take a while to sell, during which time it costs them money.... and they spend more on it during their time.

Think of it another way. what you you want for it if you were selling it? - and then add on the dealer costs.....

If you think it's a £5K car, then maybe £7K is right, maybe it's not.

For sure, it needs bits and pieces doing to it - but you will have a year to do it before the next MOT..... if you have a garage to keep it in over Winter and enjoy playing with cars, it could be ideal - if it is going to live outside and your only enjoyment is driving it, then it could be a liability!

The pulling to one side may be something simple, or may be something complex - I'd suggest getting the bushes and balljoints checked by someone who knows what they're looking at - and do it quickly, so it's covered under the warrantee (or Consumer Rights Act 2015).

I'd be expecting a tidy(ish) car, ready to drive and use, with no major faults and good paintwork for that sort of money..... and expect to have to do work on it to get it perfect.

If £7K is your top budget, then I would respectfully suggest you look elsewhere, as there WILL be extra to spend out on it (or any other one you buy).

Bottom line - I would expect the basic car to be pretty similar condition-wise to many other 30+ years-old SEs which have not yet been fully restored..... and they sell for anything from £4K - £9K with a years MOT and no major problems.

Talking of ebay and around the £7k mark this looks quite nice, late S1 ('92 K plate) Blue SE Turbo. Critically, has an MOT (no advisories) and 30 years of history.

Looks like the sort of thing I'd buy if I wanted another one (which I don't).....

....feedback on seller is a bit mixed, so probably worth going to look and try to do a deal whilst you are there to avoid some of the issues mentioned on his feedback!!!

If I lived close by I’d probably go and have a look. I’ve enough project cars anyway but if it can be got for a sensible price would be worth it. Wouldn’t want to buy from someone who seems to sell a lot of cars as if trading but registered themselves as private on there without seeing it all first
