Run out of ideas .

Postby rob/d » Mon 19.08.2024, 16:59

Ticking over super rich !
Tested the TPS , working as it should ( 0.4 volts )
So far , the Timing set properly ,TPS , CTS , ATS , fuel filter , new plugs and MAF tested and functioning as they should , i replaced the coolant sensor and air temp sensor because they're cheap anyway .
Redex , fresh tank of juice .
Drinking petrol like a sailor on shore leave .
Richer than Elon !
What next before i hand it over to a proper garage guys ?
Please don't say knackered injectors .
Car has done 49000 miles .
Thanks in advance .

Faulty fuel pressure regulator?
Blocked fuel return pipe?

If you have Elanscan have a look at the coolant temperature, if it shows -39 degrees there's a break in the wire from CTS to ECU, causing over-fuelling.

turn key to on position without starting the car.

use a long screwdriver and rest the sharp end on each injector, and put your hear on the blunt end (the handle) now operate the throtle with the free hand.
do you hear a distinc click from each injector ? if you dont then theres your problem.

if you hear a distinct click, it doestn mean they are good, but its more likely.

its not normal for all injectors to fail at the same time. usually its one at the time and you notice it straight away which makes it extremely unlikely all of them to be stuck open (they default to stuck close)

if al injectors are "stuck open" i would personally be looking for an electrical fault. but we can burn that bridge when we get to it.

as far as reasons to overfuel, i really cant think of anything to add to ron's post. but i would suggest checking the injectors because its pretty easy and quick.

Thanks for the suggestions , next checks will be these .
I bought a Gunson CO tester , it concurs with the MOT garage that it’s producing about 9 % , which is just stupid .
The CO pot does nothing , i even stripped it down , tests perfect , quite simple inside .
Thanks guys !

Erm...with the greatest of respect rob/d I think you'd still be 'stabbing in the dark' a little.

I think ElanScan data might give greater coverage of your particular situation. RonR might be able to help with this too.

OR there might be someone in your area that you could meet up with to do scan? Once you zip it and put it on the forum you'll probably get more specific feedback - and you can amalganate all those ideas.

I love stabbing around in the dark . :D
But you’re right , time to see what’s not right under there .
It’s been fun actually working out what does what on the engine , took a lot of the mystery out of various components.

Which coolant temperature sensor did you change - there are 3 and they are next to each other.

do you mean set in service mode?
rob/d wrote:The CO pot does nothing
in service mode or not in service mode?

rob/d wrote:So i got a bit bored this morning , wound the CO pot 5 times anticlockwise, car runs well and seems more power on a run .
5 more , same ish .
5 more , somethings happening and less power .
5 more , gutless .
So the pot seems to work !
what changed?

I changed the proper sender , i get that the others are the fan switch and the temp gauge sender .
Fitted new from SJ sportscars , although the original seems to test good , i.e resistance change with heat . Cheap enough to swap , just to eliminate .
The CO pot has broken , i rechecked its resistance and realised the the screw no longer turns the pot inside , the one you can see connects to the pot via a slot , which it now cams over . No problem , i can sort .
Such fun .

Fixed it !
I put a new fuel regulator but no difference .
Had another think , fitted new injectors , instant improvement on start up , bit of setting up and sorted .
Who knew 50K would wear them out , although i suspect Redex might have killed them .
Passed it's MOT today , no advisories .
Just thought i'd let everyone that contributed know .
Thanks !
