Best insurance sites?

Postby Robm100 » Sun 25.08.2024, 16:37

Hi all I'm 17 and between me and my dad (who's been a lotus owner for 21 years) we are purchasing a m100 for my first car as I'm Kean to dip into the lotus world. Can anyone recommend insurance companies who offer classic insurance to young drivers, this would be much appreciated, and looking forward to joining the lotus community .

Hi Rob, and welcome.

I would be quite surprised if any of the 'Classic Policies' will cover you at your age and driving experience, and this is no reflection on your ability to drive safely.

Such policies will only usually offer cover for a 'second vehicle' anyway, so unless you already have another car, with insurance in your own name, they may not be interested. They usually also want a minimum age (which is either 30, 25 or 21 depending on company - but can be whatever they want it to be).

I would think that your best bet is to speak to a good broker with experience of "non-standard' issues - A-Plan and Brentacre are 2 such brokers.... it will all depend on how deep your pockets are, and how helpfull the brokers will be, good luck.

Just the one now, but this one's mine! - and it will be finished eventually..... - but also temporary custodian of a project until it is finished enough for Angie to drive it

...oh, and a 2006 Freelander destined for the jungles of The Gambia - 4500 miles across roads, desert and tracks - what could possibly go wrong?

Thats an interesting challenge!

As Dapinky says! But nothing is Impossible and its just a question of how much the premium is.

First off use the comparison sites to see who will entertain you you can usually see who the underwriter is and that could be useful.

You are looking for specialist insurance ie a company that deals with the underwriter rather than putting their name on a product. It's the underwriter who decides if it is a risk that they are willing to accept and how much they will charge. When I started driving Adrian Flux were the go-to for anything unusual, I have also had good experience with Hagerty and RH Specialist Insurance. Try also Locktons I haven't used them but they do the Insurance for some owners clubs.

another avenue to look into is the MX5 crowd. I Know those are the naughty letters in the forum. however a few years ago i spoke with a young MX5 owner (18) who had a impressively good deal on he's insurance which was aquired as some kind of "club deal" sure theres no value for that in here, as this clue doesnt have any direct afiliation with any insurance companies, but you may find that club lotus or LDC may be able to help... and if you happen to find a MX5 driver in one of the classic car meetups, its always worth enquiring what kind of deals they managed to negotiate with whatever insurance company that was.

im afraid i cannot give any details about the arrangment of this fella, but its just one of those passing by conversations at car meets which stuck in my head, and may (hopefully) be of use to your situation.
