Hi
Would like to know what the component attached to the aternator is (see photo). Is it just a car radio suppressor or some type of condensor? Depending on answer, would you recommend transferring it to a new alternator or not?

I don't know the 'official' answer, but I assumed it was a radio suppressor, so I transferred it to the new one....... it works, so it hasn't sabotaged it!

Just the one now, but this one's mine! - and it will be finished eventually..... - but also temporary custodian of a project until it is finished enough for Angie to drive it
...oh, and a 2006 Freelander destined for the jungles of The Gambia - 4500 miles across roads, desert and tracks - what could possibly go wrong?

When do you need them by? If you are having problems, let me know and I'll sort out a small parcel for you.

just based on my rudimentary understanding of electrics. i would expect something like that to either create a permanent drain in the battery (because its connected to the positive stud and shell) or be a completely bogus snake oil adition to the setup
as neither of my cars have one, and they both operate fine. (without issues picking up old fashion radio signals) my suggestion would be to get rid of it.
or at a bare minimum check for the parasitic drain with and without it.

It's a suppression capacitor so there's no drain at DC, it attenuates the voltage spikes from the alternator diodes as they switch on & off, which can play merry hell with other electronics.

is this just "belt and braces" thing in the event the regulator fails ?

AFAIK the regulator is not directly in the path of the alternator output, so can't filter the diode spikes. It senses the average output voltage and varies the field winding to adjust it to the correct figure, around 14V.

I'm watching car SOS and they needed a alternator which they got from a co called WOSP alternators that they make to order and is in uk so i checked and they make a alternator for the M100 its a 65amp LMA075 no price on the site that i could find, if you are in need of a alternator it maybe worth checking them out. https://www.wosperformance.co.uk/alternators
