Engine block - raised 'ring' around coolant feed hole

Postby jamherber » Mon 21.10.2024, 08:54

With our ongoing project to replace the failed head gasket on our SE (which like all the best projects, has had some mission creep), we have a query on the relating to the block face, which we are currently in the process of cleaning up (ready for when the head arrives back from the machine shop)

Not knowing the engine, there appears to be what was a raised boss/ring on the block face, around the hole just above the water pump. Here are some pictures:-

So my question is, is this supposed to be raised boss or is it just corrosion that caused the area around this hole to be higher than the block face?

I'm hoping it's corrosion so we can face it back. Rest of block face is, thankfully, very good and within tolerance for flatness.

Thanks

Is there a corresponding dish in the head gasket?

PS hope you have sourced the correct head gasket. There are some incorrect ones (non-turbo) claiming to fit the turbo engine.

No just a corresponding orange elastomer circular seal.

Gasket was sourced from SJS - they said it's the gasket they use when doing HG changes (which I guess they would warranty to some extent), so hoping it's correct.

It's just corrosion. That's a dumb hole in the block that doesn't have a corresponding hole in the head. Seems designed to be a corrosion weak spot.
