I have been using the car for my daily commute for last fortnight, 50 mile round trip, car running well. Started the car today and tickover went up to 2200rpm and did not come down. The engine light came on. I have searched site for paper clip test but all I get is 'did paper clip test got code xx' not how to perform paperclip test. Two questions (1) does anyone have any idea what could be causing the problem and (2) where is the info on performing the paper clip . Thanks.

Fun Elan thanks for the link to the paper clip test. I thought if there is a vacuum problem the system makes changes and brings the tick over down.

the system tries (probably by closing the IAC valve fully?). but ultimately., you have more air in the engine, and to keep it from running lean you must increase the fuel delivery (with the side effect of increasing the rev) if it didnt run faster it would cause bigger problems.
my NA is also running at rather high revs but i dont have a CEL however i can hear a vacum leak in the bay, i just havent had the time to investigate it properly yet... (i guess that will be december's video

)
but enough of my rambling. what i originally pressed the "reply" button for, was to say that the
timing being off can increase your revs as well, and the
air bypass screw at the top of the throtle body also affects the idle revs.
but as mentioned. an air leak is the first thing to look for.

First place to check is the pipes leading from the back of the plenum, just behind the throttle. Some cars still have the right-angled rubber joining piece on one of the pipes which are known to disintegrate, especially after 30 years or so.
