First ElanScan Drive with logging

Erm...the timing seems a long way out according to EScan and perhaps this is why it won't run in diag mode?

In this case I think I'd be inclined to set it up, statically, quite approximately closer to 16* )isn't that called 'base timing'?) then check it with more(?) accuracy if/when we hope the engine will run in diagnostic mode?

(But I haven't had to do this yet, thankfully, so I'm just throwing out an untested idea...)

Mine wouldn't start with my EScan module switched to 'service mode' but I haven't tried to start it yet using the paper clip diag mode.

(ps does Mrs dapinky know about that trip to your local common in the middle of the night? )

What makes such a trip even worse (if it happened!) is that these runs were taken from when we only had the red car and it was her daily driver

i only know if one way to set the timing. it requires the engine to be running in diagnostics mode. some would even say it needs to be warm. (certainly seems to be an important detail with the v6 4runner comunity, althought doesnt get mentioned here)

your absolutely right, the timing may be so far off that it causes the engine to be unable to stay alive when the extra sensors input is being ignored by the ECU due to the diagnostics mode (i would like to know which sensors, because i am 100% certain the MAP is not one of them)

i suspect one could in theory check the timing with the inertia switch triggered and just on the starter. but its certainly something i would only risk if i was very desperate. starter motor is a much harder replacement than the alternator

...found this on Google...haven't tried it personally but I assume set timing mark to 16*, turn ign ON, adjust CAS manually until strobe 'sparks' then tighten up?...



A bit like turning a distributor in the 'old days'

...or 'guestimate' the timing by turning the CAS in small increments with the engine off, trying to start it until the engine eventually starts and then honing in when the engine can run?...

Hi again,

I've been busy with the soldering iron and now have a switch to short out the pins for the diagnostic/service modes.....

Also some photos of the engine bay attached.

Any suggestions on anything I can do before the car goes back to the garage for the timing to be checked/set.....

Hi all,

The Elan has been back to the local garage and now getting progress.

The timing was checked as per the Service Manuals in diag mode etc, and found to be correct.

A new fuel filter was fitted.

The emissions were checked and the CO potentiometer was adjusted to get the emissions acceptable.
The engine was found to be running lean.....

The Elan is now running much more smoothly with good idling and overall running.

When road testing the excessive popping and banging and explosions in the exhaust were much reduced to more rumblings and the odd pop, but much less noisy.....
I can now pull up at the garage to refuel in safety of not being starred at!

Going to see how it goes over next few weeks and re-adjust if necessary.

Great news jc_uk. Yes your original EScan showed that you were a bit 'lean'...

When you've given it a couple of weeks 'shakedown' see if you can put up another EScan so's we can use it for comparisons.

(Might as well continue to use EScan now you've done the hard part... ...and you can superimpose your own data for 'check-ups' as well as compare stuff...)
