Indicator incorrect colour - MOT Fail

Postby NoahR » Sat 13.09.2025, 18:06

Hi all,

I have a 1991 Elan SE which failed its MOT on ‘Rear Direction indicator incorrect colour (4.4.3 (a))’ and I was hoping you all may be able to provide some suggestions to fix.

From my research, I understand some have coloured bulbs and clear housings, therefore it’s a case of replacing the bulb as the lacquer has come off. I have, however, checked both of the bulbs (both working) and neither of them has any peeling lacquer and instead they sit in an orange housing. From the outside, the colour looks right to me.

Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance.

I use these bulbs at the rear of my car and I’ve never had an MoT problem in 10 years. I also have clear lenses.

...yep agree with Saltire's solution - or isn't there some kind of amber paint for the bulb that you can get (that I seem to remember from the past?...)

Thank you both. I will take a look at both options.

Not sure if you have this sorted. It is the whole outer cover that is tinted or not tinted. check that both tail lamps are the same first - do they both have approval markings?

Hi Simon, haven't yet taken to for an MOT as brake headache has slowed me down a lot so I can't yet say if its okay or not.

What do you mean by approval markings? They are both orange, and as far as I know, have never been replaced.

Thanks
