NITROUS

Postby nitroman » Mon 04.10.2004, 01:56

Some thoughts on having nitrous back after some time without it:  NITROUS IS GOOD.  1)  At any throttle opening you get instant response just like a big block; which is especially important when motoring up a hill in 3rd/4th or from a stop-light.  2)  Nitrous is effortless.  It is a light-switch where a turbo many times is gradual like a rheostat.  3)  Others cars don't even bother giving you a 2nd go once they have been bloodied so badly.  With just the turbo, the momentary race gives them hope that their hot ride might prevail if just given a 2nd chance; as no one likes to go home knowing their car is NOT the kick-ass ride they thought.<br><br>I very probably found the reason why my nitrous blew off the safety valve a few months ago.  I smelled something burning today & traced it to the bottle heater.  It was incredibly hot to the point that its rubber surround was tacky (almost melted).  I simply snipped the electric supply and removed it.  It has an internal thermostat & is supposed to shut off at a pre-set temperature.  Obviously this had ceased working.  The weather is still warm enough not to worry about it, but if I do need a bottle heater I'll get a bottle pressure gauge installed & have the bottle-heater contolled via a manual switch.

Nitroman, your nitrous settup interests me. How long have you had it on ( how many miles ), did you do any mods to the engine to take the extra power, how does the car handle 270bhp ?. Tell us more about it, very interested, seems a simple & relatively cheap way of upping bhp as long as it dont blow the engine. :-/

Scott, you know what its like, great at first, then you want more ! ;D. Not sure what i want really, just exploring all the different avenues. Have heard nitrous is relatively cheap, & set up properly gives big power gains with little hassle ?, just wanted to tap Nitromans experience of his setup :-/

Paul, most mods are noted at the bottom of my posts.  My NOS cost me over $2700 with dyno testing to get the A/F ratio correct, etc.  You will have to get an FCE or soon discover what it is.  This is not a bad thing like with a large turbo as the shop will put the proper jet sizes into your added NOS & fuel lines until the A/F ratio is safe.<br><br>It is a great hoot, but I have discovered that Florida is a hotbed for car tuners and Georgia is like living in a different world.  People cannot believe I have nitrous  whereas in FL it was "I have that/yeah, my friend has that."  No one here has the skill to do an install like mine, and I would not advocate going to a single injector system as NOS injects as a gas & it will not distribute evenly with the fuel into each cylinder unless you have a NOS/fuel injector for EACH cylinder.  In short, if you cannot find an expert this is not the way to go.<br><br>I believe I have had this system for about 2 1/2 years.  A friend who had the same guy install his NOS setup pulled the head from his Mitsu Eclipse at 60k to lower the compression and noticed no abnormal wear.  On the other hand I know people who have installed OTC nitrous systems and melted their engines in 5k miles.<br><br>Another thing, nitrous, because of all the nitrogen in the gas causing a 'cushion', has hardly ever been known to cause pinging & also absorbs a great amount of heat.  In fact, it cools the engine!  <br><br>The latest use for nitrous in turbo aplications is to inject small amounts of NOS (usually via a dry system) up to about 4,000 RPM to provide performance until the turbo spools up.  However, nitrous should never be used when lugging the car along, only in a gear that will allow the engine to get to redline quickly.  The load on the bearings is too great when the engine is moving slowly.

Ok, here goes, got my nitrous system today, its a wet system with a single port injection. did not find any multiport systems, thought this would be a good start off point anyway, never had anything to do with nitrous before, so would like to see how it performs without spending out loads. aim to get the car rolloing road tuned after installation to get the right setup.. will keep ya all posted on progress.

This sounds exciting Stevie, wonder why our american freinds insist multiport is the way to go, & we cant even get it, us being the motorsport centre of the world, anyway good luck, by the way do you have to have a piggy back ecu to control the fuelling or can it handle it as standard ?

multiport would be one jet drilled/placed into each intake runner--this is the only way to insure even fuel distribution to each cylinder (kinda like single vs multiport fuel injection!).  Single port can cause one cylinder to scavenge more nitrous than others which could give uneven power burn and mess up the engine . . .

Hi agree with everything that has been said about the multiport system, although i am no expert in these matters, we all have to learn somewhere, i would have prefered to use a multiport system but cannot seem to locate 1 in uk, anyway managed to get a deal with this single port system so will persevere with this, am going to try it with standard ecu, as have little experience!! will be a case of trial & error, hopefully not too many errors..

Thanx for the advice, <br>didnt realise it was so easy to change to a multiport system, will certainly look into this option as i think it makes sense to go down this route.<br>Not going to rush the fitting as got suspension & brakes to do aswell. Hopefully when the sun shines in the spring all will be completed.. 8)<br>

Another thing to consider is your ignition system.  Even if you get the A/F ratio right the increased cylinder pressure can douse your spark.  Using the Torque Master spark plugs helped on that score.  I had narrowed the gap on the standard plugs to the point where the idle quality suffered.  <br><br>To have multi-port you will need to tap the intake tract for all 4 cylinders.  If there is enough interest I could have this done when I go to Jacksonville this Xmas/New year, if you can spare your manifold.

Of course, what you'd need for this is a spare manifold Stevie... ::)

See pictures of the finished product here:<br>http://www.lotuselancentral.com/pixmwNOS.htm<br>You want to make sure & tap the 4 runners (there are 8 in total) that do not have butterflies in the lower tract.  Offhand I don't  remember which these are although I did post them in the old LEC forum.<br>The man for the job is Dwight at:<br>Stage 6 Motorsports Inc<br>7530 Argyle Forest BLVD<br>Jacksonville, FL  32244<br>U.S.A.<br>http://www.stage6motorsports.com/Default.html<br>phone (904)777-3250<br><br>He can give you a price on this as he will recall doing the work on my car.  You should insist on talking to him.  He is however the guru, owner, and the busiest one there.
