Gearbox problems

Postby Monty » Mon 11.07.2005, 19:45

It`s looking like the whining i`ve been listening to since i`ve had the car is`nt a wheel bearing. possible it`s the bearing were the drive shaft go in to the gearbox.
This could be a question for Candles.
Are these bearing easly available and what cost?
Could it be the diff whining?
I know u have to split the gearbox to replace these parts, but is it an easy job?

Oh and what the difference between the stock Diff and the Quaife?

Any advice would be helpfull as i`m not intending to drive all the way to scotland (end August) with that bloody whining

I can think of at least one method in which one can prevent whining. But in order to guarantee proper and continued fitting, it would involve the dispursement of certain carbon objects of crystalline form.

Does the whining vanish when coasting or with the clutch depressed Monty?

No Sy,

It`s a constant whining even with engine off and just rolling  thats why i thought it was a wheel bearing.

A question for Candles. Four candles? Or is that fork handles?

Sounds like final drive bearings (either side of the diff) or on the output shaft. Either way it is a gearbox out and split job. Bearings are available aftermarket at about £30 each, I'll dig out the part numbers later. Good time to put a Quaife in.......... And a lighter flywheel with uprated clutch.................................

In my vast experience of breaking things, I would wait until it gets really loud then do it

Well it'll have to get done then. One way around a big lay-up for the car would be to buy a second hand gearbox, throw it in then have yours reconned, to be fitted at a later date. This is the 'throw money at it' solution!

Not updated to the latest news but here is the page I wrote when I did it:

Just a thought, but how many miles has Pinky II done? I haven't heard of gearbox problems like this before and would suspect the driveshaft centre bearing first or even CV joints maybe.... You did say all the wheel bearings were OK? Mine whined despite having no play in them at one stage.

Pinky II has done 69k +, both drive shafts have been replaced. When i had her up on the ramp at 50 mph there was no noise from the wheel bearing and Albert (does the Elises for the NORLOG lads) didn`t think it was driveshaft centre bearing and more likely it`s the final drive bearings, can the diff also whine?

Don`t forget i`ve got a gear box in Pinky 1 which i can use, just trying to weigh up my options.
