To pass a UK MOT test the emissions are done with the car warm, the pre cat can be safely removed and insert the main cat for a MOT. The garage that has just done mine charge me £31 to fit the main cat for the test then remove it.<br>

Hmmmmm this is VERY interesting. So is it the consensus for an S2 that you remove (Sy's method sounds cheapest) the pre cat material and physically remove the main cat, only refitting the MAIN cat for an MOT after having ensured the engine is at operating temperature SHOULD get it past the MOT emisssions test.

Hello all

I'm an S2 owner as well and my local lotus specialist suggested removing my existing system including the main cat and replacing with a stainless steel sports system from Janspeed which was made for the non cat Elan, the mot would not be a problem!

The system and fitting was around £500.

Does anybody have this system fitted to an S2?

S2 here as well and as posted several times before in various threads my experience is that without any cats at all the car fails the emissions test at MOT time. I subscribe to the view that the precat is the biggest restriction on the exhaust system so I've replaced it with a stainless steel funnel arrangement with a 2.25" exit to match the rest of the exhaust. My main cat is removable and is fitted to pass the MOT. I haven't got round to taking it off again and in all honesty it doesn't seem to make much difference to performance whether it's fitted or not. The reason for this lack of difference is probably because it was modded by my exhaust builder to give it a 2.25" inlet and outlet, again to match the rest of the system, the only restriction now being the ceramic core. The ultimate solution would be to replace with a free flowing sports cat which could then remain fitted permanently.

I believe Nick Chase does, after talking to him in the past I was looking at the Janspeed exhaust but I see a black cloud on the horizon. My mechanic was not suprised to hear the Janspeed went thru the MOT catless he believes a lot of MOT stations erroneously test the S2 as an SE as they dont have the correct figures, however more and more are getting the correct target figures and as such he believes this system will fail. He recommends replacing the main cat every time an mot is due as being the only way this will work.

Oh yes . Over 600 in fact and caused some short term domestic strife . It was a one off though and features such as the precat eliminator, a flexible piece to avoid cracking of the exhaust as the engine moves on its mounts, the removable, modded main cat and a second small silencer in front of the offside rear wheel so it isn't too noisy all added to the cost.

it just means you have to get the other half a gift that costs more than the exhaust

One point my local place did get across was that THEY could get the car through an MOT which ever exaust is fitted, so if anybody ever needs to get a car through an MOT with a very friendly place let me know and I'll tell you there details.
