Timing adjustment

Postby lewtus » Wed 20.07.2005, 06:32

Just checked the timing with the ALDL clip sort and all. I raised the CAS all the way and still can only muster 13 TDC ...cannot touch 16 at idle. No more room for adjustment there...had resoldered the CAS , was not bad, but is there another adjustement as well...need to do the seals there as well.

Make sure u`ve got her in service mode (paper clip test) and the car is up to operating temperature. If u can`t get the timing to 16 degrees then it sounds like u`r cam belt has slipped or wasn`t fitted correctly, maybe time for a cambelt change :? Don`t understand
resoldered the CAS
have u got the new HALL fitted?

My first reaction would be to check you are looking at the right mark on the pulley. Mine is very very tiny. After that, I suppose it must be either Monty's suggestion of cambelt timing or an issue with the coil pack electronics or wiring. Check the coil pack earth as I know this has a drastic effect....... It is a little black wire onto the front mounting of the coil pack. Clean it up and reassemble, then have another go!

I did the short the ALDL first. So that part was fine. Car was fully warm as well. I did resolder the CAS before that to avoid the rush in the future! I suspect the belt may be off like you say for that large amount of being off makes sense. I could see the mark clearly and used whiteout on both side of the markers. At least it runs a lot better now.....just need that big T3/T4 turbo like my Esprit.....

have you got an Everest chip yet then?

agree with aboves -- you sure you got the timing synch on #1 plug wire (closest to timing belt)? another dumb question as I expect the answer is yes. May also be just a bad CAS/Hall Sensor !!

I had the same problem when I first bought my Elan. Moved it as far as it would go, and still couldn't quite get there.

Bought a new CAS & installed and it was fine. Car ran prior, no codes, lacking power though....it was weird.

Don't know why it happened or what caused it, just know what fixed it and that was good enough for me :)

Hmm sounds familiar to me, no code, no power , poor start.. The fuel filter was bad and that helped a lot. I should get my spare CAS anyway...sooner is better I guess! :D
Driving it today to meet another Red elan ..might swap his out to verify.
I do need to pass emissions test now as well.

I only have the stock chip now, I will likely add a larger turbo and raise boost with water injection.. more fuel too

My Elan is running a bit low on power latley as well! Also, from time to time the start up is bad. A lot of turning over, and a bit of misfire after start. A couple of times the car was misfiring after start for a minute or more. Sounded as though it was not firing in all four cylinders. Are these all symptons of a bad CAS. I was planning on installing new plugs, wires, and MSD Coil packs in the next week...should I replace the CAS as well?
I have not yet checked the timing, but would assume it is ok except during the times when start up is poor and idle misses.

Thanks,

My car had similar symptoms but ended up being clogged fuel filter....invoice showed dealer changed it but did not.
You can check the timing easy enough first via the front right wheel.
the CAS does go bad often so chnaging it is never a bad idea after 40K miles on it. I resoldered mine but it was fine to begin with. that is what goes in them the solder melts away :porn:
