Screeching window

Postby Stef » Sun 10.04.2005, 19:47

Driver's window has decided to make a toe curling screeching noise when winding up. A bit like nails down a blackboard :-X

Works fine though and no noise going down.

Any ideas other than take the door apart?

Just go for taking the door panel off and with any luck you should be able to get away with just lubricating the runners with some grease before things start to seize up and get expensive.

Phil

Stef,

Had it been raining when this happened?

This may be the cause:
Inside the door there are a couple of forked metal stops that have rubber nipples on each end. Over the years these get hard and when the window is wet the nipples rub on the glass and cause the noise.

Anyway enough about nipples on glass, o er matron.

I've got a couple of photos that I'll put on when I can remember how to do it.

Richard

Here is a much easier solution for this problem, and also without a doubt keeps our windows operating longer between rebuilds. Take a rag or paper-cloth and somewhat saturate it with Dry-Teflon-Lube. Smear this clear liquid all over both sides of your door glass. It will dry to a white haze. Take 2 clothes, one on each side of the window, and rub the excess teflon off as if it were wax. This cured my screaching window & also makes it go up & down much more quickly. I can't say how often you'll have to re-apply as I've only done this once so far. It also leaves your window looking cleaner than any "glass-specific" product I've ever used. I now put my window down more often than I used to as I know it is under much less stress than before. I have used the top product but I think the bottom one is very similar & as I am almost out may order it the next time. This can also be found at Marine Supply stores if you are lucky enough to live near the ocean.
