White Dials & Fun Boy Three

Postby Paul.P » Thu 15.09.2005, 17:29

I know this has been discussed before, but i can't find it, so can someone please tell me which dials it is that we use. I know they were slightly different ( 160mph i think ). Also with regard to the FBT, i can remember when Sy got his, one of the gauges had to have special connection that was a real pain to do, has anyone found any that are a straight replacement ?

Paul

I've got to go and shower for work, but your memory is spot on.

The main dials are Lockwood from the Calibra Turbo, if I remember correctly.

The FBT dial (mine are Phantoms by ?) that caused problems for me was the oil pressure gauge which needs to be fitted with its own sender (on the rear of the engine) to stop it reading backwards. It then needs a diode fitting behind the binnacle to stop the oil light illuminating constantly!

Which reminds me...I haven't seen much of Herr Brookes recently...

Have a listing - I think they're the 400QQ.

But I'll keep looking...

Thanks Sy, will get onto them about the dials. Did think someone had sourced some FBT's that just slotted in, or was that just wishful thinking ?

a little bit offtopic I know, and that you will hate me after this post, i know it too :( but for me a speedo has to be round :) round as much as he can :)

Thats one of the points, why I love my Elan so much Image cause the extra-instrument in the dashboard :D

in the kia, don´t beat me, the instruments all are round. IMO if you change the Elan from authentic original to sth you like more, why not the second step? I think, if you ever have made a decision, that you wan now change the original skin, then you hve the longest way behind you....

so please, I only want to show another position... Everyone must take what he likes himself :)

What for me is not perfect, the only white lumination. Your red is much much more better. But for chainging it, you have not only to change the lightbulbs. You have to change the complete inlets :(

So I will try it next season, to change the bulb so daylight will be white and night red 8)

2ps worth

Postby theelanman » Tue 20.09.2005, 09:13

just my 2 penneths.....
my speedo goes to 170mph.......the astra/calibra one shows only 160mph....while this may have no significance at all I just wondered if that would mean that the needle would need to be recalibrated.......
any ideas (coz I do like them white dials)?
also what about getting turbo/oil/volts in white too????
cheers

Gareth you are right, but the combo of the Lockwood 160 mph dials and S2 wheels put the speedo accurate (according to my Road Angel) to within 3 MPH between 0 and 110 mph - a vast improvement on stock I believe.

Turbo, Oil and Volt dials are what we refer to as the FBT - Fun Boy Three!

BTW, like Charlie, it's the AutoMeter Phantoms that I have too.

Sy
thank for the info
why fun boy three spring to mind but I get the feeling that could be a loooooong story!!
so.....in summary....lockwood dials for the main dash panel and then the phantoms for the FBT......one thing though I presume you went for the part sweep electric, what about the turbo gauge?.....couldnt find one.....erm having just typed that I'v just though I bet its not electric....
anyway....how simple was it to do, what was the total cost, have you had any problems,.....anything else I should know......will look nice with a new interior!!!
doh!!!
cheers

Sy
yes sorry was me not thinking........found the boost gauge
one other thing from that though is which did you pick as they are in PSI rather than bar and (in theory) with 1 bar being 15PSI we dont really need 60% of the gauges they have....what did you do
also was it a case of take the gauge only out and plug the new gauges into the existing wiring and holes?
cheers

Off the top of my head:

Wiring needs to be modified - different connectors.
Sender unit needs to be changed on Oil pressure gauge (at rear of engine = nasty). Then you need a diode to extinguish your oil warning light.
Turbo - mine reads from -25psi to +20psi IIRC.

Not straight forward and don't recall costs, sorry.

Dave Meyers sent them from the States, he might remember.

To the leadership of the LEC: Do we have any summary for the different cockpit scenes? :) Please move my post in case of this..:

Dunno about your opinion but the following solution I like best so far

courtesy of the www.clubelan.net

Please don´t forget, that the normal kia-cockpits have a complete white illuminating
