Help by changing timing belt!

Hi Lotus wizards: I'm trying to change the timing belt but as I expected it's very hard to get the pulley off! On lotus service notes page 17 is a drawing where i can see that they use a hammer handel to block the engine (without sump cover)! Does any of you used this method?
And about using an impact ratchet? I'm afraid damaging the engine by using it!
Can anyone give me some clues? It's beautiful weather over here (Algarve) and I want to drive my Lotus!

Impact wrench is the way to do it. It won't damage the engine as the crank is well used to getting shock loads. To stop it turning the crank you can put it in 5th gear with the brakes on, which works as well!

Sealey 240V Impact Wrench, best buy I ever got for £180, more torque than most and makes most jobs a breeze, wheel off in say 10 seconds?

Advantages - Speed, speed and speed and will get most of the bolts off that your breaker bar will not including ball joint bolts if you can get a flexi-shaft in.

Disadvantages - it doesn't do ever nut and bolt (3 so far although they were a main crankbolt than destroyed blocks of wood trying to remove the bolt and a couple of 20 year old chassis bolts on the n/s, the rest it removed ok), it is also quite long, so will not fit into the smaller gaps. Still best to do bolts up by hand.

Thanks for your information! About Sealey Impact wrench, I think I cannnot get it overhere in Algarve! I'm thinking about buying a compressor today for all that heavy work and also handy for wheel nuts!
