Variable Inertia Charge System in 4XE1-MT

Hi all.

I have read the service manual and our Elan has equipped with the VICS system (don't know what it's called really :roll: ). So I wonder how can we know if this system is working properly. I can't notice when it's on or off in my car. It should be isn't it? when the engine changes their inlet valves from 1 to 2 and the other way round. :(

took me a while to figure out, but I assume what you mean is the intake runners. The ECU opens secondary intake ports under certain conditions. There is another post on this and how to spot if it is working visually. I'll let the others fill in the specific/details . . .

Cheers Doug.That's right. From what you are saying, it sounds like the ECU use it just occasionally. My understanding is that the intake runner was blocked one lane by the ECU at the low rpm to increase VE. and open for both lane of runner at the high rpm. Now I'm not so sure that's correct. :roll:

I will try to find the old topic about this. The answer might be there.

Any more comments? :idea:

Cheers Doug. Seems like you guys has gone further already. For the best point of open or close the secondary, I would say, might be at the intersection point where you lay the torque curve(or power curve if prefered) of the close and the open one together. This yields the maximum of the area under the curve. I still wonder how those 2 curves gonna look like coz at the low rev of our engine is very much drivable compared with other turbo'd cars. I think Lotus engineer has done a very good job so far. :D

yeah if you do a dyno with them closed the whole time and one with them open all the time that must be the way they figured on an opening point . . .
