In the end, I just put the sump back on. The illustrations I printed off the elan disk showed someone wedging the handle of a hammer into the crank so's to get the crank pulley bolt off. But my crank pulley bolt is on tighter than a ducks arse, not even heat would shift it. There is a very slight leak from the bottom of the sump and it is a bit bashed, bruised and rusty, so I think I will just replace it.
