one of your 2 gear cables has broken, its an elan weakness but can be fixed quite easy. the best option is to fit a set of ab cables avalible from willb.

Speaking of gears and not intending to hijack this thread (almost certainly a gear cable mate, best to change them both) Blipi is not holding first very well. She keeps popping out :?

Something to check first of all before buying new cables.

Early Elan cables were held in place at both ends by cheap wire clips which are prone to pop off and alow the cables to pop out of their mounting brackets.
Lotus solution was to re-fit the gear cables with proper Circlips, you might find this is your problem and a 50p circlip sorts it.

Alternatively it could be the plastic adjuster sleeve on the gearbox end of your cables in which case new cables are needed.

I have a couple of sets of the improved S2 cables 1 set brand new and the other is second hand PM me if you want more info.

The same happened to me a couple of years back.
I changed gear quickly while reversing from reverse to first and that was it - the cable had gone.

From memory I could get 2/4 and reverse - it was enough to get me to the garage.

Important.
I had mine repaired at Sinclairs of London (A127 Romford Area) and an excellent job they did.
It looked like a pig of a job for the DIY er - leave it to the professionals and get BOTH cables changed at the same time. It will cost you more, but if one has gone the other is likely to follow.

From memory the total cost including a topup service was circa £400?

Good luck.

If you are a competant DIYer and have a good selection of tools its not that big a job, I replaced the cables within 3 hours on a driveway under a spot light with the help of my brother and never had worked on an elan before.

The New aftermarket cables are spot on in terms of fit, however it did take another 1hr of adjustment and test driving to get them spot on so they engaged gears correctly.

Never had a problem since....even with my brother driving it!

But yes, replace both cables if you have to change one. They are the same design and where one has gone the other is likely to follow.

One cable controls the upper set of gears (1st, 3rd & 5th)
One cable controls the lower set of gears (2nd, 4th & Reverse)

If you lose one of these complete sets of gears then its 99% that one of the cables has gone.

Actually one cable (fore/aft) moves between 1st-2nd, 3rd-4th and 5th-rev.
The other (crossgate) cable selects between the three.

P.S. I have a my original crossgate cable left over from when I changed to the AB cables.

Yeah, I suspect there are a lot of crossgates out there! Including one in my boot! ;)
