I finally managed to reduce the file size of my picture to below the 10K maximum to allow it to be uploaded into my profile, but the image quality is cr*p whereas the original was pin sharp.

I notice other people have good quality profile pictures, what's the secret?

Re-sized to 150 pixels wide in Photoshop, then saved in lowest file quality.

I saved the resized image as JPEG at high quality from photoshop then opened up in MS Paint and saved. Did the trick for me (much to my amazement)!
Photoshop doesn't compress very well for some reason!?

If you have a mac: I don't know.

Do the following:

- Select "save for web"
- then in the next window make sure you select that you want to save as a jpeg.
- the addjust the quality slider until the image is 60%
- then select save image
- then you are done
