Oh thats right, I see that Dave has no AC, I forgot.

Dave, the pipe looks great and that gives me a good idea on what I will need to do.

Looks great! I have the A/C to contend with so mine will not be a nice bend like you have, but then again I'm going to be internally wastegated.(For now). By the way are you using a wide band O2 sensor, or a regular one? As long as I'm asking, what brand are you using?

,Russ

I was using the LambaBoy WBO2 kit in the last version of the car when I tried to tune using it, the Apex'i AFC, and the timing computer. Since I'm going to use the Unichip this go-around, I've sold the WBO2 and will only use the stock O2 sensor for the ECU. I'll have everything set when the car is dynoed/tuned, so I won't end up having a use for the WBO2. Now if I had a Haltech, it would be a different story...

Well, if you can wait a few months...

Seriously, I could make another as it does mate up exactly to where the stock exhaust connects. Mine is a 2 1/2" dia., but could be made any size. You'd have to talk to Russ about getting the T3, though. :D Might have a few fitment issues hooking it up to the IHI!

Did I mention that T304 stainless is real nasty to cut? Seeing how my "metal shop" includes such exotic items as a Dremel and a hacksaw.

Thanks! That was the worst of the pipes I made (and it gave the welder fits getting around all the pipes/O2 bung!). Yes, the blue piece is a Tial external wastegate. Bascially works similar to the stock actuator (opens to let exhaust by after a given amount of boost) except the volume of the bypass is much larger. Hopefully it controls higher boost in a much more effective manner than the stock flapper valve did.

I'm guessing we'll have the usual "White Thanksgiving" and "Green Christmas"! That means after things come back from Jet Hot I should be able to install and drive a bit and tune before putting it up for the winter. Um, let me rephrase that: I WILL drive a bit and tune before putting it up for the winter! I'll find enough dry days!

Just a quick update for the time being! Work has me buried until Christmas, then I'm praying for a breather before mid-January when I go back under until 4/15...ack. :? Plus I cracked a rib which has limited by mobility getting under the car...doh!

Everything is back from Jet-Hot and looks great. The only issue has been the new downpipe/external wastegate pipe (see avatar). A few threads got coated which really delayed me on what little time I've had. For example it took me about 4 hours just to mount the wastegate due to a very tight fit and some stripped threads. I ended up with slightly different mounting hardware than I planned orignially, but that's what happens when things start from scratch, I guess. Currently the pipe sits in my daily driver and I'm hoping to find someone local who can tap the oxygen sensor threads for me in the next day or two. The special grey coating is like iron and will not come off with a pick or wire brush, so instead of chancing destruction of the threads on either the sensor or the bung itself, I've got to get it cleaned correctly. This is a perfect example of the little details that have held up the final process. Not to mention we've had snow for what seems like every day of the last 3 weeks. I've got 3' in front of my third stall where the Elan sits. Probably should change back to my "winter" avatar again...

Anyway, I hope to catch up on the forum in the next week or two. I've got some pictures and after cleaning the threads, everything goes in. That would be a nice Christmas present!

OK, got to my pictures...also got a tap to clean my O2 threads and the sensor now fits nicely. Things should go in sometime over the holiday when we get home. Too bad I can't take my car to the in-laws to work on it...

I posted this becuase the connections you see took so #@$% long to get right. Since the external wastegate didn't fit perfectly after the welding, all the threaded connections had to be drilled out and new, high-temp hardware sourced and fitted.

Dave

Have you got any drawings/pictures of where you can mount/fit a 4 point harness and roll cage?

I e-mailed you this pic as well, but just in case you didn't get it, here's the lower mounting locations for the Auto Europe rollbar as an FYI. The left mount is the stock seatbelt point (which I use for the harness), and I use the lower right mount for my other lap belt point. My rollbar was custom-done with a crossbar for the upper harness mounts.

An eventful weekend, but not totally for the best...

After receiving the Samco coolant hoses on Sat, I decided to hold off on finishing the car to get it running and work on the hoses before putting everything back in. Besides, I had the small coolant leak to deal with anyway. Before I put the hoses in, I deceided to also install the EGT probe. Because it installs in the manifold, the Jet-Hot coating had worked its way into the threads. I started the bolt slowly, then backed it out just to make sure it wouldn't get stuck. After two successful tries, the third was not the charm. To make a long story short, the bolt stuck, broke in two, I broke a drill bit trying to drill a hole in the bolt to put a screw remover in, then broke my drill because I was so #@$% off. Needless to say, not what I needed after 14 months of not driving the car.

After putting the kids to bed, a 1/2 bottle of Merlot, some reflection, and watching a replay of the Goodwood races on Speed, I was recharged. (Well, sort of :? ) I went back out to at least get some positive results and installed most of the coolant hoses. The Samco hoses look great and I even found a small leak in the aux coolant pump that hopefully was easily fixed with some gasket compound.

Tonight I should finish off the hoses. The only other problem is the oil return from the turbo. It's a really tight fit and most attempts with the supplies I have result in kinked hoses. I may need to order a few new parts, but should be able to run the car with a temporary bodge. I'll do it proper before the dyno. As for the broken bolt...#@$& it. The tuning shop can deal with it. I'll tap the other hole to clean it out, put the probe in so exhaust doesn't leak too bad there, and be done for now.

Ya know, this wouldn't be nearly as bad if it wasn't tax season on top of everything...

why not get the engine running before hooking up the hoses and all the ancillaries?? this way you can be sure it runs before you install all the other stuff that just gets in the way of finding a problem if it doesn't run ? ? ?
