S2 Performance Exhaust

Hi All,

I'm in the market for a stainless performance exhaust as mine needs replacing from the cat back. I am not replacing the pre cat or the cat it's self.

Can any one recommend a performance replacement that will not be too loud but at the same time would offer some power gains. I don't mind a 'throaty bark' but am unkeen to have a straight 'through exhaust type noise! i.e. like the Scorpian models'

I have seen Miltech systems which I have heard are respectable and would fit the bill, but can anyone tell me of they are overly loud compared to the standard item?

Also can anyone recommend any other alternative brands, retaillers that supply them and approx pricing for the system including fitting kit, as I will probably attempt to fit it myself if it's a fairly straightforward job.

My car is an S2 M100.

what about a sticky with prefered suppliers???
a general one for everything or one in each section...
the exhaust question seems to be asked every 5 minutes as does thing like lights and side repeaters, wheels, etc etc etc

With it being an S2 and having 2 Catalysts to flow through, I don't think you will feel any performance benefit with a larger bore or better silencers. For the price, I would recomend a standard system in stainless from SJ Sportscars, perhaps with a sports silencer if you want a more aural experience - but the two cats will probably silence most of the noise anyway.

Unfortunately most of the threads referenced in the above posts got trashed when the YABB host folded last year (when Tony & Liz fixed us up with this spiffy new site) so a lot of the historic knowledge which would have answered your questions has disappeared.

Basically you won't get any performance gain at all (none) if you just replace the silencer. You have to enlarge the bore throughout. The biggest obstructions (on a S2) are :
a) the pre-cat
b) the squish (over the crossmember)
c) the cat
d) the 2" cross-section of the standard pipe.

I have a custom built 2.25" exhaust on my S2. I can't find the original thread which had pictures. I lost the pre-cat (recomended) and have a removeable main cat as I need it fitted for MOT. It was expensive (nearly £700) but is quality work, it still has a trace of a squish over the crossmember but much less than the standard item. The simplest approach is to fit a no cat SE system from the pre cat back the retention of the pre cat should give you the ability to pass the emissions test but is (in my view) a compromise on efficiency.

Hi there, there is a place not to far from me in essex which will build you a stainless sports exaust for around £350 (Exbury on here had his exaust done there last year) which i found recently to be very helpful.

I've got an S2 as well but my exaust was fine but the cat was nackered and was preventing me getting full boost, the easiest solution was to have the cat cut out and replaced with a straight piece of pipe, they even removed the squish at the same time as well for the sum of £50.

what a difference it has made! drives like a totaly different car!

Ok, details are Extreme Performance, Billericay, Essex on 01268 534471 doing a 2.25 Stainless steel grade 304 system with full lifetime warantee for £350 inc of VAT although 3% charge for Credit Cards. They say they have done elans before and fit time is around 2 hours. Booking on Saturdays needs more notice.

Great. Thanks. Is the system that you have yourself much louder than the standard one? - I dont mind a bit louder, but if you know what I mean, I dont want the car to sound over the top compared to standard.

I was the first person to go to Extreme and have an exhaust made, it's now off the car and been replaced with an SJ one as i couldn't live with the noise.

I certainly did, i had a complete 2.25" system from the precat back from extreme and it never felt great, also the car seemed to hunt at revs a lot and wasn't great to drive, i changed to the SJ which was a complete SE system and left the precat in, also had the squish squished out in it too. The car is now a pleasure to drive again and i have taken Alans chip out at the moment too so cant wait to refit it. I cant say the exhaust was 100% the problem but it's certainly a major culprit for me although others seem to have no problem with it or other big systems. Sort of no help in the end i guess lol.

...and on the flipside:

I bought Avonvilla's exhaust off him and had it fitted last week.
It has totally transformed my car!

Previously I had a standard 2" bore system on mine, which included a nasty squish at the cross-member. The squish may have been exaggerated by incorrect jacking at some point.

The old exhaust (while nice and quiet) was literally strangling the engine, due to the back-pressure being too high to overcome.

Now that it breathes better, the turbo boosts properly and the car really flies. Economy hasn't improved, but that's probably because I'm now enoying lots of "wahooo" moments whereas before I had the worst of both worlds!

The biggest issue I have to sort is one of boost creep. This will require either a ported wastegate or going back to my old chip.

The new system is a bit loud, but I was warned about that and it doesn't bother me. In fact I find it quite funny when it sets off car alarms! And maybe I'll start getting better economy once I get through the "lead welly" phase.

How you finding the sound ? too boy racer or supercar ? lol
