squeeky noise from front drivers side wheel- what is it???

Postby rushing » Thu 09.03.2006, 08:53

hi

can some one please give me advice. when i start my car their is this squeeky noise coming out from the front drivers side wheel. i had a fuul service recently with new clutch and front calipers put in . the car rolls ok apart from this noise. its worse when its stationary. i just asked a mechanic what this could be . he said it could be the full gear box. is this correct. ? if so how much and where could i get one from. I really hope this is not the case as my car has done only done 60 k . i think its the driveshafts. but im not an expert. any one who knows about this please let me know. i dont want to spalsh out money for a gearbox if its not needed.

thanks guys

IIRC the cam belt is on that side of the engine, gearbox is towards the passenger side.

Did you have your cambelt changed when it was serviced?

Must be a Top mechanic to say it is the gearbox. It also cannot be the driveshafts if you say the noise is present when the car is stationary.

I would say it is one of the belts or items driven by the belts,( alternator, Power stearing, A/C) all of these are on the drivers end of the engine and it is not uncommon for belts to squeak as they get older. Or when they are retensioned (as your mechanic who did the clutch/calipers may have done) or it could be an actual bearing in one of these items/idler

Does the sound increase with engine revs ?

Does sound increase when turning steering (whilst engine running)

Does sound increase when all the lights turned on (whilst engine running)

Try and this should point to the cause

Process of elimination, it can't be anything to do with the movement of the car i.e. wheels, driveshafts as the noise is there when the car is stopped, likewise it won't be the suspension (unless you happen to be bouncing the car while stopped).

Rubber belts tend to make squeeking noises and there are a few located just behind the drivers wheelarch, the biggest of which, I think, is the cambelt.

I would be carefull of saying that it's worse when stopped as while travelling some of the sound may be masked by wind/traffic.

I would suggest following the post above and make a judgement on RPM rather than MPH, although at higher revs the engine noise may drown out some of the squeek.
