Service bulletin 1990/16 states new design fuel tanks with improved resistance to joint cracking are marked with the letter 'M' on the rear face of the tank in indelible marker.

...which could be hard to read as the tank that Mick got from me is black!

Well folks, i know a lot of you are at Donington now, and i do wish i could have been there too to check out the cars and meet the faces not just forum names.

BUT....................

the car is SORN'd till next month, and i have just replaced my old cracked fuel tank(a mere 3 inch crack running from the refit nozzel downwards) with the replacement i got from Sy V, and it all appears to be tickityboo once more, not filled it brimmers yet as like i said, its SORN'd but i'm positive it will be fine when i do.

Still got to sort the rear screen out, but thats in hand for next month.

Big thank you to Sy V for the tank, i COULD have repaired the old one, but no need now.

Oh yeah, and finally, it took me about 5 hours(with the help of a mechanic friend) to do the job, would have been quicker but the strap bolts and nuts were really badly gunged up and needed a lot of work. but 5 hours of my time vs £400 or so to the garage, well worth it.

Congratulations on replacing the tank - not an easy job! Look forward to seeing you at Donington 2007, or there is always Stoneleigh later this year!

agreed! 5 hours is quick too so be proud!! Just be sure all the fuel hoses are properly tight. Worth changing the fuel filter while you are down there under the rear cover . . .

I've just Been looking at replacing the fuel filter (to go along with the fuel tank repair/replacement I'm about to do) - Christopher Neil price was about 10 quid + VAT

Got one - £10.99 and NO postage, so I'm glad I didn't allow myself to get into a bidding war on that eBay item!

Only thing is, it was a helluvalot easier to find in Halfords than on the actual car itself! :?

Can anyone provide any clues? I seem to have left my manual on CD in my PC at work.

Also, when doing the job do I need to crimp fuel lines to stop the tank emptying all over me?

It`s in the fuel line :-D

you have to take out the plastic cover were the hood in stowed, once out look from the drivers side and u`ll see an access panel on the side of were body work humps (its not the one on the top, thats the fuel pump.)

I tripped the inertia switch and ran the engine till it died, but still got fuel every where, just make sure u`ve got plenty of rags

good luck

Excellent directions - made the job MUCH easier. Thanks Monty!

I also have to say how even more impressed I am at the construction of the car having done that job. It's just so intelligently laid out. A pleasure to do.
